we should arrest the pope...

On a serious note, I dont think the catholic church has comes to realize this is a scandal of biblical proportions. Sweeping it under the rug isn't going to work.
Certainly hope they don't but there are many (some on this thread) that would only be happy if every Catholic was utterly destroyed. I don't think like that. BIG mistakes were made and there are HUGE changes at the local diocesean level and at all local parishes...if you are not a practicing Catholic and don't attend a church, I'm not 100% sure you should be leaping to all of your conclusions and condemning all of us because of what you read in the media. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

Your religion should have some respect for our children then.
Not sure what you mean, can you clarify? Oh, you mean the ********* priests! Ah, OK, got ya. Yes, because of that an entire religious group should be discounted and can be dumped on and discriminated against with impunity. I like the way you think. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wow.gif.23d729408e9177caa2a0ed6a2ba6588e.gif

The old order is getting squeezed out and on a local level at least, huge protections and changes have been put in place, including the removal of ANY abusive priest, with close coordination of the state AG's office and local law enforcement. Was what happened bad? YES! Did it **** that many were allowed to slide on by and continue the abuse and the fact that bishops and higher allowed it to happen? You bet. But unlike here in America, the Church outside of America still doesn't get the severity of what happened. They don't. It doesn't mean that they aren't working on it but trying to converse about this with many of you who don't even buy into any religion is going to be pointless. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

At best, the church is above the law and makes its own decisions in these matters, it made a horrible mistake in systematically hiding the alleged rapes, continues to over look the guilty parties in most cases, and lied to the public and its own congregation to whom it teaches the word of truth. At worst, the priests are not above the law, and should face real and immediate trials, including situations in which the crime was hidden by others in positions of power.
Are you implying the media has created a conspiracy against the Catholic church and all these accounts of crimes are made up? Even if that were true, or possible, which its not, what matters isn't what happened... what matters is what people believe. You can chose to ignore the problem and suggest its all a vast conspiracy to attack your religion, but the problem is real, the crimes are real, and the perception is the church hierarchy is doing their best to cover up as much of it as possible.

Not choosin' to ignore it bro...I'm one of the members who slammed the hierarchy before, during and after...we will survive and eventually get rid of those in the upper reaches of the Church who chose to ignore it. Stop painting with such a broad brush. You seem to imply that since there were bad apples in the Church, we are all bad and all complicit. Couldn't be further from the truth or the real truth of Church teaching. Forgiveness bro, BIG part of the teaching of the Church and of our Lord. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

Where did I say or even imply all Catholics are bad?

Exactly. Thanks for seeing it the correct way.

And I never said the crimes weren't real, nor was the impact these crimes had against the victims. What I am saying is that a lot of this came to a fever pitch 5 or 6 years ago, and since then, at least at the American diocesean level, major changes have taken place. And yet, anytime someone dredges up another old story about the abuse, everyone jumps back onto it like it happened yesterday. That was what I was trying to say. Today, people are defined and condemned for their actions, not for the true person any one individual is. Jesus preached forgiveness. He separated the sin from the sinner. Our God forgives and forgets. Those of us on this Earth either never forgive, tie the sin to the sinner, or say they forgive but then remember so they can use the sin against the person or persons again and again.

I don't know about where you live, but where I live priests have been defrocked, put on trial and convicted. In some very sad cases, the statute of limitations has run out because the crimes were back in the 70's or 60's. That doesn't excuse the crime, but that also is not the Church's fault that priests may have "gotten away with it". That's our legal system. And that does not mean that some are not guilty of covering it all up. The bishop in my diocese is very guilty of that (in the 70's and 80's), but there is darn little we can do about it now. He will be retiring this year and we will finally be done with him.

I was certainly not happy when Cardinal Law was reassigned to Rome versus facing our legal system for his responsibilty in all of this mess. But that is Rome and the Vatican, and trust me, I am no fan of the Vatican. They are too far removed from the everyday Church and too drunk with wealth and power.

I have a huge amount of respect for my pastor. I have very little respect for the bishops or cardinals above him. I never really have had a lot of respect for the higher ups as many of them are into the politics and the power. But even at the local church level, I know that a priest is just as human and fallable as I am. I do not place anyone on a pedestal. Nor do many nowadays. But that is not how it used to be and that also was a contributing factor to the level of abuse that occurred. Thank God it is not like that anymore.
