voltage drop question, help fast please

my buddy just got a new truck, it was prewired for an amp. We went to hook his up and found that with the car turned off we are getting 12.XX volts, but when turned on we are only getting 6.xx volts. amp wont turn on. Any ideas

Prewired for an amp from the factory???

I'm no automotive expert by any means but that's a new one on me unless it was prewired for a factory amp that would be included in whatever the premium audio package available for that make of vehicle would have been.

If with the truck on the voltage at the pre-existing wiring drops to 6v my initial response would be it's prewired for some proprietary sort of gear but NOT for an aftermarket amplifier.

Just get some wire of the appropriate gauge and hardwire it into the truck just like you would on any other vehicle.

when in doubt, run new power and grounds...........
