using a capcitor does help..........

dumb retarded people like this is the only reason that keeps me voting against abortion

A capacitor places more of a strain on a system than anything else. When it's charging, it's a load. Add in an amplifier, and now you have multiple loads.
After 1 time constant of charging, the capacitor is at approx 63% voltage. In a 13.8V system, this is 8.7V.

After 1 time constant of discharging, the capacitor is at approx 37% voltage. In the same 13.8V system, that is a mere 5.1V.

While the amplifier is trying to do it's job, thus drawing current, so is the capacitor when trying to constantly charge while constantly being discharged. Voltage to the amplifier is diminished because of this. The circuit must equalize based on a constant power source and the number of loads present and the individual demands of each of those loads.

Think of it in terms of static electricity....

When you walk across a carpet in socks in the right atmospheric conditions, you are building a charge. Touch a door handle and this charge suddenly goes away. You and the door handle are loads on the power source. After 1 Time Constant (walking the distance of 1 foot in second, for this example), you have built a bit of a charge. When you touch a door handle, you might not feel or see the spark, but this doesn't mean you're not discharged... you are!

After 5 time constants (walking 5 feet in 5 seconds), you have built up a much larger charge. Touch the door handle and you can now feel (and likely see) the resulting spark from the near-instantaneous discharge.

Now, tie a wire around the door handle and hold on to it. Walk the same 5 feet in 5 seconds across the carpet (power source). Your body doesn't build the same charge because the wire is constantly discharging you to the door handle. Your body is TRYING to build the charge, but, this will never happen since the constant load of the door handle (amplifier load) is present in addition to the constant load of your body (capacitance charge) to the constant power source (the carpet while you are walking across it). Because of this, the voltage is much lower when measured at the door handle and the body since you are acting as an additional load when charging, pulling voltage away from door handle as the door handle is pulling voltage away from you. The only thing that stays constant is the power generated from the carpet... and that now has to be equalized between both loads.

I know this likely isn't the best example stated in the best words, but I just wanted to try and explain it in terms that 999,999 out of 1,000,000 people have experienced for themselves as best I could in a relatively short amount of time.
you should take this and make a new thread and have that shit stickied so that every other person who comes on here will stop saying anything about the benefits of a cap. Best simple explanation i've seen that should allow anyone with any basic knowledge of a circuit to understand.

Caps are great things , and serve there purpose very well. I am working on my own car right now. It will have a 1 farad cap in it............................................................................to filter the noisy *** nissan electrical system //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

okay, i see that the OP is wrong and is ignorant about electronics but some of you guys go a little too far on the insults. there is no reason to be a douche and say shit about his mom and whatnot.

ps- have we confirm that his amp makes 1200 watts?

No... if his mom brought a retard into the world, she should be held accountable for said retard! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Yah, big difference between filter caps and +12v stiffening caps...
kthnxbi.

To the OP, all capacitors are the same lol

My friend, I just did a search on why capacitors don't help car audio, and the only thing that came back was some one posting in a forum just like us giving bogus and uninformed information why it didn't help him. NOW I am going to go back to school on you , yes I attend an ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING SCHOOL and obtained my DEGREE. I can email you a copy of that also. Capacitors do exactly what we what them to do. They STORE ENEGERY for rapid use. SO nobody in here can tell me the capacitor I bought is not doing just as I described. And you definitely can't prove to me I didn't notice a difference in the bass getting mushy when the cap wasn't installed . So having said that I would like an amp theat can push four tens @ 1 ohm 300 watts per speaker. Do I have to figure that out also?
WB
What did you get a degree in? Sleeping or Drooling?

Get your money back.
^x2

u call that post gibberish, but then u say u have an engineering degree? lmmfao! also, u can't tell the difference between 2 obviously comletely different capacitors. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/bsflag.gif.21f42eccd34b7d1eb1608fb1b59b69c3.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

He is onto something.
The discharge rate of a capacitor is alot less than a standard battery. Therefore a capacitor creates a bottleneck that the current has to flow through. Lowering the energy that can flow freely to your amp; therefore, your amp produces less power, giving the illusion that it did help out the electrical system of your vehicle. In reality all it did was made your amp make less power.

And anytime you use less power guess what? your going to have less dimming. The "louder" is simply a placebo effect.

Oh yea, and since you attended an electrical engineering school and not an accredited university, I suggest you write Devry and tell them how piss poorly they taught you, because I learned more in my computer engineering vocational class at age 16 than you know now.
That's all it is, you simply think since your lights are now no longer diming or greatly reduced, you amp is gettin more juice, where as it's the wrong way around.

i think the OP got his Degree from The Institute of Walmart.

I am not saying changing the ALT is out of the question, but for me, not at this stage. And you are wrong about the strain part.
1. The cap is charge before the car has been started.

2. The only thing drawing power from the cap are the amps, not my lights etc.

3. If you blow an ALT you needed another one any way, it has nothing to do with

your audio system,
Are you high?

If you blow the charging system of your car, it was by no means effect by the heavy electrical strain that was placed onto it?

I hope you never work in any other field other then paper or plastic.

you have a degree in electronice & you use 8 ga wire on 1200 watt amp! mmmm
LOL

Well said, I was actually thinking about putting a small 2-3 farad cap in the rear as I get a little tiny hum from the charging system of the Subaru.

I've always had a capacitor just because I bought it before I really knew anything about car audio, and I just never took it out.

but just recently I got around to taking it out and from just my hearing alone it actually sounds like it lost a little bit of output. Thats just my own personal experience

All I have to say is WOW. You are using the wrong size wire in your current install AND you are trying to sell some 1/0 which would have been better suited to meet your needs. Wow!
I am not bashing you but read the entire thread. Some said your car has to be as long as a football field in order for you to need to use 1/0 wire.

Just curious how many watts are you pushing?
