used gun prices?

Hitman;
Yes, they are plenty accurate for self defense. If you have time to aim at someone, then you have time to get away without having to use your gun.
For most situations, you're 100% correct. Id rather get the hell out of a situation then have to go to trial.

I can hit a paper target at 10 yds 95% of the time in the hit zone with the point and shoot method.
Thats pretty good, and the best thing about it is no wasted time getting sights on target.

When I said accurate, I was refering to say a Beretta, competition 45 or long barrel revolver. I only list those because they are guns I own or have owned.
Understandable, ive just seen a lot of people bring up accuracy as an issue when for a defense type situation it really isnt. Just making sure there wasnt any misunderstanding there.

I can hit torso sized objects at 50 yds with my 357 wheel gun with just a small amount of aim time but not so with a Glock. Granted, I have had much more range time with my wheel gun compared to a Glock.
Again, understandable. It took me a bit of time to get used to mine. Not to mention a lot of dry-fire shots with a dime on the front sight to keep it still.

As for the part in bold, you know as well as I. Carry whatever you shoot best. I love wheel guns and they dont jam. The only downside is it holds 6 rounds, but if someone can take 6 .357 rounds and keep coming at you... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif well I dont think its possible. The Glock IMO is the closest you're going to come to a wheel guns reliability, but with more rounds.

What model revolver do you have anyway?

You can always find a gun off the street, usually a 9mm or .45 for around $70. - $100. Or you can can find a decent 9mm at a pawnshop for $150. I would try and find a sigma 9mm. Good guns, had mine forever, fired many rounds through it at the range and around the house. Never failed me. I got my sig 9 off the street for a $100. bill.

i was reading a guns and ammo a month or so back when i was going through a newstand at the airport. they had an intresting article on barretta's new subcompact. forgot the model though...p9 storm? or p9x something. worth checking out. retail is around $500, iirc.

how much should i pay for a used handgun? im thinking 9 mm or .40Glock is what everyone at work is suggesting,of course. except for the one gun nut i work with who recomended some brand that strats at like a g.

just need something reliable, doesnt have to be "name brand". ive seen a brand called hi point that has mixed reviews and they have guns that strat at only like 150 new.

anyway if i do get a glock or somehting similar what should i expect to pay from a pawn shop etc.
Well, I have just over 30 guns....ranging from handguns to shotguns to sniper rifles, to assault rifles. I would recommend for you the Springfield Armory XD9A sub compact 9mm. I have this gun, and its the one I carry almost every day. It has the same trigger safety that all the glocks have, but also has another safety on the rear of the grip, so you have to completely grip the gun AND pull the trigger for a fire. It also has the little button that shows there is a round in the chamber. It fires amazingly smooth, and is very accurate and easy to shoot. It is black and green, and is very small....for carrying. I even have the clip extender, so it holds an extra round.

Also, I would recommend ANY SIG SAUER. I have 4 sigs, my favorite being the P245....the 45mm. It has tijicon nitesites, and is the most accurate gun I have. For a 45, it really doesnt have the kick like others, and is very easy to learn to shoot. For a 1st gun, however, I would like to see you get a sig 40. It has more power than the 9mm, but not as nasty as some 45's. The sig 40's are small enuff to carry if you want also.

Stay away from a TAURUS....no matter how cheap you find one. They are well known for jamming.....not what you want when trying to shoot!!!

Either way, good luck.

thanks for all the replies guys. i figured there were going to be quite a few opinions about this subject on here.

Oh and what is the intended purpose of this gun?
im about to deploy and would like my wife to have some sort of defense other than just pepper spray. plus its a good reason for me to have a handgun when i get back!

I Just recently bought a S+W sigma 9mm. Never been happier. 280 bucks brand new.
anyone have any more info on this one? seems like a good price from a reputable gunmaker

The G22 comes with 10 round clips. Glock makes the 14 and 15 round ones you can buy. Texas has no restrictions and the guns are the very same you can buy.
My suggestion...If you want cheap and still a good gun. Either go with Ruger, Glock, or a used Sig.

Run hard and fast fro a hi-point. Ive had a few jam up and scare me.
as i figured sig's and glocks were teh brand of choice. i also figured that hi point was too good to be true but was holding my breath.

You can check out gunbroker.com if you want updated current prices on used guns. Both guns are very reliable and fun to shoot. If you're considering the 9mm version, the equivalent would be the model 17 (same size as the 22) and the 19 (same size as the 23)

.
yeah ive looked at gunbroker website and kinda like it. but again i wasnt sure what kind of prices they had compared to new and pawn shop/gunshow.

Remember this though, no matter what gun you decide one it needs to be kept clean. If not, even the most reliable gun may jam.
yeah thats one thing ive learned in the military. supposed reason why jessica lynch never got a shot off when she was captured.

I think that no matter what you get you should take a safety course first!
You will get some hands on experience and learn the proper way to care for the gun and most imporantly how to handle it safely!!

Like what was mentioned above Glocks can be dangerous if you arent experienced. There is no safety and no decocker so its always ready to go.

I have a Glock 19 (9mm), SIG 229SAS (40), SIG 239 (40), and SIG 226 Equinox (40). As you can tell I like SIGS.

The best thing is they hold the value so spend the money up front and dont buy junk!!
ive been "qual'd" on the military beretta, M9 and am about to go requal in a weeka dn a half. i shot sharpshooter, the middle score, for the first time of ever shooting a handgun. ive got experience with shotguns and .22 rifles but had never shot a handgun before. i guess though i should probably still take a class and the wife had better take one too!!!

why does everyone keep saying there is no safety on glocks? i'm pretty sure my frineds .40 has one on it.

The glock safety is deactivated as you press the trigger, unlike the beretta which has a safety lever which must be engaged before the gun can fire. Both are effective as long as you respect and understand the function of the gun. Sigs have a different system as do 1911's. It's a matter of finding the platform that you're comfortable with.

If you are buying the gun as a self defense weapon for your wife, you will need to pick something that fits her hands and that she can shoot well. A double stack .45 may be difficult for her to handle if she has small hands. Take her to some of the local shops so she can handle the guns to see what fits best.

As far as caliber, go with what she can shoot well. A 9mm with a quality hollowpoint is a very effective weapon. I would not go with anything less than a .38 special for defense. If possible, find a range that has guns available for rental and try them out.

Another idea is to consider a shotgun. A 12 gauge Remington 870 makes a very nice home defense weapon and will be more effective than most any handgun round.

good point. plus shooting skeet is awfully fun.

thanks for all the help so far. i have a good bit of info to think about to make my decision.

The best thing you can do is decide what you're going to do with the gun.

Home defense, concealed carry, fun?

Once you decide which of those best fits your needs, go from there. There are several gun forums out there to get info from as well. Shotguns are the best choice for home defense, they do the most damage up close and chances of you killing a neighbor by accident is slim (depending on what ammo is used)

Just dont think you need to buy 4-5 guns right away, as I mentioned, it can get addictive so dont forget that //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif

If your carrying concealed, i wouldnt recommend a .45. I had a Springfield XD40 Subcompact and it was perfect size for me. I tried concealing a Sig P220 (.45) and it wasnt easy. Also, if your wife has never shot or unfamiliar with pistols, i would recommend a 9mm. .40 or .45 might be to much for her. (not saying she is a wimp)

Brands i would recommend would be Springfield armory, Sig Arms, HK.

I picked up my springfield new with 3 magazines and a holster for about 475.

I would recommend taking her to a gun store/range and have her shoot a few pistols and see what she is most comfortable with. Also keep in mind about safeties. Some guns dont have a lever safety. Glocks, Springfields and sigs dont have physical safeties(the ones i have shot....newer ones might. Sigs have decocking levers but not an external safety)
