Type x help please

I just picked up an alpine 12" type x without knowing too much about them. my previous systems have includes 2x 10" r's, and a 12" type s. I am running a mrp-1000 amp, memphis 4amp wiring kit and a sound ordinance box.

I know the sound ordinance box is probably holding me back, but it seems like something is wrong with the setup and I cant figure out what. Pretty much both my 12" type s and my 2x10" r's were much better than the type x in terms of quality, loudness, and overall frequencies it will hit, and those subs were also in cheap pre-fabs with much cheaper walmart wiring. So im not sure what the issue is. My amp settings I have played with quite a bit but are currently for the best settings I could find at: Gain .5v, Bass eq +12db, and lp filter at 100. Besides sounding ****** the sub and amp also just started causing a weird smell and got pretty hot.

Please help me to figure out the issue before I go crazy.

If your amp is getting extremely hot, you are either wired at too low of an impedance or your gain is set too high. Type R's should have a little more output than the Type X, but the Type X should sound a fair amount better. Also, the box is the probably the most important part of how your system performs, so you are right in the aspect that it is holding you back.

Heres some pictures if it helps at all.

Turn the bass eq off or to 0. Increase gain to match your head unit voltage whether it's 2v 4v 5v 6v etc. Do that by using a digital multi-meter. Lots of videos on youtube on how. My low pass filter is around 80-85 so drop that down as well. If sub is getting hot and smelly...you're probably clipping the **** out of it!

Thanks Jason, I'll try that! Is there any websites that sell half decent boxes or will I have to go to the local audio shop to have them build me one? I noticed Dave the box guy has a 12" ported but not sure if this sub should be ported or sealed after all the research Ive done..

Its a dual 4ohm voice coil subwoofer and it appears to be wired in series from what I can tell. Would that mean im running 1 ohm which is too much for the mrp1000 to handle?

DVC 4 ohm subs can be wired to either 2 ohms or 8 ohms. If you have multiple subs then wiring is more flexible.

this is what it should look like to put a 2-ohm load on your amp.
Thats how its currently setup. So I should be running 1000rms @ 2ohms. So the subwoofer and amplifier should be working together in perfect harmony if I get the settings correct and a proper box.

I left a message in Double 07s email box for a quote on a box.

as long as your gain is set correctly and and the bass boost is on 0 your amp shouldn't be straining and should send quality clean power to your sub. Definitely pick up a custom box for that sub. It's a pricey sub, deserves a decent custom box! Also look into your head unit's settings as well. Don't max out the bass and sub level options. That will send a dirty a$$ signal to the amp and can cause problems.

My headunit is currently all neutral as far as eq/sub settings. I did some researching on my trunk size to send dimensions to double 07 and it looks like my year of jetta has a $h1t load of sound deadening in the trunk so that may be why my setup is not sounding nearly as loud as my old setups were in a saturn. Looks like I may either need to remove the trunk lid thingy, build some ports into them, or go to the local audio shop to have them build a custom box that will port into my cabin.
