Type-R or Type-X

Hey guys, short story: I have a PDX-1.1000 with AWG 2 wiring in my Yaris and I'm looking for a subwoofer. The only ones I can find locally are cheap $80 MTX and Alpine Type-R / Type-X.

I would like to know if I'm better matching a Type-X to my PDX or sell my amp for the new PDX-M6 with the new Type-R for 600W RMS both. Or I can still match the new Type-R with my PDX-1.1000 but I would like to be sure to not burn the sub in the first year.

It would be used for all kind of music but I like the lower notes in techno/rap/hip-hop. No alternator upgrade or anything more on my car, just the stock factory electrical system with that AWG 2 wire coming from the battery. I actually want it loud and don't care that much about SQ. The question is more to know what will be the best as I already have a PDX 1000. By tjhe way, the enclosure will be not too big, hatchback trunk.

I've heard that Type-Xs aren't really louder in ported enclosures vs a small sealed enclosure. Would it be great to go in a small sealed box? Would the lows hit better with ported or sealed box?

For my electrical system, my PDX-1.1000 was pluggued to a Type-R with the gain set to half for a year or so before the sub finally gave up with the gain set about 3/8 ~ 7/16. With the Type-X I would obviously be able to set my gain to 3/4 ~ 7/8, would it still hit as loud?

if u want loud? the two 2 type rs will walk all over 1 type x.
I already know that but I want only one sub, 10 or 12" (probably 12", I guess it gets a little bit louder and hits lower). I don't have the space for 2 subs, I'm using more than half of my trunk already for other things.

You don't set your gain by RMS ratings, you can do it by ear to where you hear no distortion, or using a DMM and oscilliscope for perfection.

And what I would do is get two type rs. On the loudness side, a Type R and a Type X, so I've heard, is about the same. But because Type Rs want to be ported, and the Type Xs want to be sealed, I'm guessing with that amp, the Type R will get clearly louder if you put it in the right box. Also, people feed Type Rs 1kw RMS daily with no problems, just be super careful with your gain and you'll be good to go. But if you buy that Type R and a second one, 2 Type-Rs in a good custom built box, in a Yaris, will be freaking loud.

EDIT* Just saw you only want one sub, still go with the Type R and have someone on here build you a box for it.

1000 rms my a$$, not daily for any decent period of time.

^^ agreed, imo type r's do not put out clean undistorted bass, I like my music sounding good so id go with the type x. OR if you wanted something with more output and better sounding for cheaper, you could go with an fi q 12 for ~250 shipped or an ht pro blackout for 160 shipped. Theyd take that 1000 rms all day long.

I did it before but... I burned 2 Type-Rs too.

One thing I've seen... My amp is 1000W either at 2 or 4 ohms. The 2 SWR-10x2D I had were different impedance. One dual 4 wired at 2 ohms. It lasted for about 6 months but there were always a really bad smell in the car. The other one, dual 2 ohms wired at 4 ohms, didn't give me any bad smell at all or anything and I've sold it working right after 8 months of use.

Is it really better to take a DVC 2+2 wired at 4 ohms? Considering I really don't think I will add another sub in my setup anyway. Maybe I just got a bad unit for the DVC 4+4 that broke after a few months.

By the way, the new Type-R is rated at 600W instead of 500, anyone know if it can handle more easily the 1000W of a PDX than the previous gen? If it's as underrated as it was...

I would really like to try a 12" last gen Type-R but I don't want to burn it with my PDX 1000 like I did with one of my last Type-R.

do NOT put 1000 watts on a single type r, thats ASKING for trouble, do it right the first time!!(maybe try something other than alpine to, theres better out there... EXPLORE)

Yep but I'm in Quebec and there's no local store with anything but Alpine or cheap MTX as I've already said.

If I'm buying online, it's $120 only for shipping and I still got nothing. That's the bad thing, except if you know any good shop in Canada (that wouldn't add $70 for brokerage fees).

I've heard a lot of good things about Fi Q 12. Does it get louder than a Type-R and play better?

I might try to import it but it sounds expansive, especially if I need to find a good enclosure. I guess this sub plays better ported?

LOL the type r and fi q are in a TOTALLY different league my friend. And yes you'd wanna port it. If price is an issue, I have an ht pro blackout and let me say... it sounds just as good as my idmax and icon... for literally half the price of 160 shipped.(on ebay). It's in a different league than that type r as well... the type r's sound UGLY compared to it.
