Bass boost is def a no no, its not needed if you got your gains right. The gain was kind of high on that amp and probely pushing it past its limits. Plus with your SSF set so low, and the tuning set high, it was just all that put together that did it. ...

I might not know much about car audio w/ these newer amps that are out, but coming from home audio / theater (fan boy); I can honestly say that the bass boost damaged those subs man.

My SvS and Cadence are never above 65% amp level.

Actually since I play the 15" Cadence lower due to the deep bass I just use +2 on the Bass Boost to only "HELP when I play movies or music at lower levels, but want the BOOM. Never ever--- use BASS BOOST when your playing music at higer level. VC did fry b/c of that. I am sure bout that.

You should aways use a X-over if you can. Let that control the freq level while only the AMP is to power the SUB, not control the BASS or using the steriod BASS BOOT option //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

so by the amp not getting enough power that can cause clipping too? he has a 200 amp alternator from db electrical and we did the big 3 on his car in 1/0 knukonceptz wire. and the car is lifted used to have 24's on it.

No, not getting enough inpput power will NOT cause an amplifier to clip. Some people in this thread do not know as much as they think they do.
Judging by how you described the mthod for setting your gains/bass boost/etc, my guess is that poor settings lead to clipping and premature death of the voice coils.

what exactly is clipping. i know it causes distortion and is the #1 killer or systems. but what is it. too much power, not enough, just overall bad signal..?? when an amp is pushed into full clipping, would it actually sound louder, just not as good?? i think i am having a problem with clipping my GP3000d-pro on a hdc312 with a stock 117 alt and stock alt..

I guarantee that the subs had played well below tuning freq. of the box they were in and were getting a nasty signal with bass boost turned way up. Well to my understanding why clipping kills subs is because it raises the average power on the coil and can not dissipate the heat. I use to think distortion killed subs other ways. But something that really shed light on it that I didn't know. Even if you have a sub on a true 1000 watt amp. after imp rise prob only sees 800 approx. Now here the real kicker. Lets take imp rise out of the equation .... Say your amp does a true 1000 rms at the ohm you are at. Because of the freq change (imp changes on the amp) and different recording levels depending on song and freq in that song. A non clipped wave although may see the 1000rms for split hairs of a second actually only averages i think 30 percent of the rms power with a typical cd. Now my numbers may be off a little. So even with a true 1000 rms if you aren't clipping it , it prob only sees a average of 300 watts of power. Problem with clipping. Not only does the amplifier put out more power so now we will est this amp is putting out 1300 rms with a heavily clipped signal. Its average is MUCH higher in relation to the total output(higher percentage average). Depending on the cliping level I will guess(correct me of I am wrong) we will say 1000 to 1100 rms AVERAGE. Which would be like hooking the sub up to 3,000plus non clipped watts .... Oh yeah and audioholic was the one that actually got me researching this because I thought I was right.......... Ehhh guess you can't win them all. Before I didn't know about average power though and this is a big factor into why distortion directly doesn't kill subs but causes MUCH more average power output. Anything I miss?

Actually with my clamp on. With my current settings I can go from neg 3 to neg 2 on bass and it only sounds a hair louder. But pulls from 10 100 percent MORE amperage depending on the note. That is how the average goes up. Also my peak power note doesn't really pull much more, a lot of the notes that weren't "pulling" much power before begin to. Thus raising the average power . The higher the average the more heat that needs to be taken out of the coil over the same amount of time. Apologize if the english isn't up to par. Pretty tired tonight

Ive never had a problem with bass boost.. but ive also got a mtx TA92001 on 3 15" 9500s .. bass boost never killed my subs.. y is that? as long as you get the right amp for the right subs you dont have to worry.. my amp is 3000 watts RMS and 6000 Max.. all 3 subs are 1000 RMS a piece and 2000 Max.. and i run at 1.34 ohms.. i can put my boost all the way up.. and not have no problems at all.. along with a 180Amp HO altenator and big 3 upgrade and 3 Yellow Tops.. all packed into a little mitsubishi eclipse..

my friend has sent his speakers off and they should be back within a week or 2. here is the new box. suppposed to be tuned to around 32ish hz. he got it built at another shop this time.
