tips for building a box

my subs point forward and i got 3 subs. so it strains on the box alot more then say a box with the subs on top. maybe it was just bad luck or something last box i had that didnt happen to it. or any other box ive had. i did use some wood glue called loctite from walmart. i tought that was enough. but im switching back to gorrila glue lol

also my box is close to 7 cubes and the baffle is 15x35 inches. probably flexing to much and with the weight presto one broken box. second layer of mdf on it should fix it permantly, i fixed it and hasnt broken any more but i dont trust it
did you brace your box?? a second layer of mdf will help A LOT. Look at mr. marv, or woodlawncabinetry.com , or the bcae1 site listed above. A solid box will either be REAL small, or have bracing.

My current box only has a single baffle, but it has an internal skeleton of bracing.

I'm only putting 1/4 power that my subs are capable of handling, some of the DD guys use corner backets to keep boxes from coming apart at that power.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/up2something.gif.dd110ecf3ae4b76050d87598f2f8de7c.gif

I used gorilla glue on one box. Wood glue, I use titebond II, is fine. The woodworking guys I've talked to use gorilla glue for things like chair repairs...things with real wood, their thoughts was that it wasn't the best for clean seam work. Plus it's expensive and H3LL to get off your hands:D

I think you may just wanna pay someone to build you a box.

That is the most stupid post in this thread. How can you suggest something like that, when he can and wants to learn himself? Have you made your box? Have you taken the chance to even make your own box? Do you even have a system???

yea its not hard to do, especially if you get pointed in the right direction, which is the reason he has made this thread; to learn the dos and donts.

Learning to do yourself>Paying someone

And that comes from someone the builds boxes for other people.

draw out your plans before doing anything,

premark your wood before cutting to insure a straight cut

test fit your box before assembly to make sure your cuts are the right measurements.

predrill your holes and use 1 1/2" coarse drywall screws

apply titebond (I use II myself) to all the mdf piece that will make contact with eachother.

drill the screws into the predrilled holes

use a silicone sealant on the inside of the box to prevent air escaping

when carpeting use 3M super 77 or 90

spray on the mdf and the carpet

allow to tack start applying

let the corners overlap and use a razor to cut through both pieces

remove the underpiece and the over piece will go flush and look seemless.

sorry no pics to show you step by step but thats how most people get good looking and sounding boxes.

"Some silicon caulk releases acetic acid fumes while curing, which have the potential to destroy subwoofer surrounds"
False. Id say that most people on here that have punctured a hole in their surround have used none other than silicone to fix it. I used the think the same thing about not using silicone on enclosures, and i still dont, but many of the guys on here that know a hell of a lot more than i do about audio, told me that it doesnt harm the surround.

i suggest for the silicone to be GE Silicone I Premium Quality.
Should be a blue bottle.

Dante
