The Official Type R Thread

boooooo, i want a recont lol. oh well nice test. how much were u feeding the RLp. if posted it sorry its bn a long ass day
orion 2500d at 2 ohm.

Thermally it is pretty strong... handled near its max (mechanically limited) for a good while, too bad it didn't do much with it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

The biggest surprise was that it didn't handle much mechanically! This box is designed with the intention of keeping the excursion do a minimum.... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

I just hope it sounds better in a different box, SPL wise I don't expect much more out of it, if anything.

****, i wasnt expecting the type S to perform that well
I didn't expect that much on the SQ end... in the A/B/C comparison it flat out spanked both the other woofs. I was listening to the same music and trying to hear when the other woofs muddied it up... and i couldnt pick it out! Then I realized the sub was playing each individual note in a complex passage... Sounded like it was supposed to.

At low volumes, the type S reminds me quite a bit of the type X... the type X does a higher volume much better, and its just dead on all the time because of that extra headroom. The X, SPL wise, is more on par with the RL-P.

I should perhaps add that I prefer the sound of the type R over the type S. For SQ buffs and SQ competition... type S all the way. But for rap music the type R just has that nice fat low end that the S Just can't match. The S is very smooth, but the R makes it sound something along the lines of a bass boost being on =)

The R also handles *much* more power than the S on music and will play alot louder for alot longer.

All you get of the magic wang box //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

ive got a couple questions.....1)would my 12" 1242d be able to take 2 strapped ED9.1 in a 2.5ft^3 box tuned to 36?..how long would it play music for before it would be unsafe?
with the amps at 2 ohm?

I'd give it 2 songs.

With the amps at 1 ohm?

About half of one song... and its gonnnnnnaaa waaaaaaaaaaaang //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Just be very careful about building the box if you wire to 1 ohm, the R isn't indestructable in EVER box ya know //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

2 songs and the woofer will be beat or 2 songs and i can unhook and use my normal amp still?//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif
2 songs and turn it down... depends on box and the song ure playin. Certain songs the woof will of course handle more, and in certain boxes the same holds true.

Alpine Type R 12 2500d @ 2 ohm (one coil on a dual 2 hooked up.... DOH!!!)
I thought I told you to put the doobies out an hour before testing woofers //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/up2something.gif.dd110ecf3ae4b76050d87598f2f8de7c.gif, Type R comes through yet again. Also how would you compare the Type X to the Rs for daily?

put the doobies out? no... never... i refuse

The X is one of the best sounding woofs i have ever heard.... but its just not loud. Louder than the RL-P, got dam right.... but that doesn't say much lmao //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Man, Im just twitchin tryin to get this setup done... all this talk about how awesome they are just has me goin... but at the same time im taking my time so I do a perfect job...

If anyone would like the plans to this box, lemme know, I can scan, and post.

This enclosure is 48" wide, and 20" deep, and 16" tall. Might be 16.5tall, cant remember haha... one or the other. the dimentions include the face amp rack.

So if that works in your SUV or backseat, I can give you the plans that I had made myself.

They are 2.3cuft after displacement of port, and sub, each. Tuned to 32Hz.

just a few things...

1) the rl-p should reach it's mechanical limits in 2.35ft^3 using 1700wrms. it's rated for 500, and while it's generally accepted that they'll handle around 1200 max, that is mostly box dependent. even in my review, i suggested no more then 1200 for ported applications, and only with properly set gains. and yeah, the type r is rated the same, 500wrms, but 1500 peak..so i guess that's a wash...

2)in my experience the rl-p shines in 1.95-2ft^3 tuned to 34hz. again, 1700wrms is pushing the power limit.

3)i will not argue with the spl numbers. the rl-p is not the loudest sub u can get. they can get loud, but are not the choice for someone wanting all out spl. that's been proven a couple of times.

4) sq is very subjective. IME, the rl-p isn't muddy in the right box. i've ran it h2h with an xxx in 1.25ft^3 sealed, 2 ft^3 tuned to 34hz and 2.5ft^3 tuned to 28hz. in the 2.5ft^3 box, it (the rl-p)was muddy, got low, didn't get loud and in general ******. but then again, so did the xxx and that was supposed to be it's optimum box. inthe 2ft^3 tuned to 34hz box, both subs came alive. the xxx was the louder of the two, but the rl-p was the cleanest. both subs hit real nice down low, very clear, no boominess at all...inthe 1.25ft^3 sealed, teh rl-p owned the xxx. again, the xxx was the louder, but it couldn't keep up down low at all, and was just suffocated in that box.

5) what's all this mean? simply put, the type r is a good spl sub. great. it's louder then the rl-p, but so are a few other subs. no biggie. sq wise, well, that needs to be taken with a grain of salt. different boxes, different results. different ears, different results. it all goes back to what a specific person feels sounds good to them...take this review for what it's worth. one guys opinion on three subs sound quality and his testing for output. is there a clear winner? yep, in this test anyway....the type r is the loudest of the three subs at 1700wrms. in this application...

Looks like I called this one correctly and OP hasn't been back to post any glowing reviews either.
