just a few things...
1) the rl-p should reach it's mechanical limits in 2.35ft^3 using 1700wrms. it's rated for 500, and while it's generally accepted that they'll handle around 1200 max, that is mostly box dependent. even in my review, i suggested no more then 1200 for ported applications, and only with properly set gains. and yeah, the type r is rated the same, 500wrms, but 1500 peak..so i guess that's a wash...
2)in my experience the rl-p shines in 1.95-2ft^3 tuned to 34hz. again, 1700wrms is pushing the power limit.
3)i will not argue with the spl numbers. the rl-p is not the loudest sub u can get. they can get loud, but are not the choice for someone wanting all out spl. that's been proven a couple of times.
4) sq is very subjective. IME, the rl-p isn't muddy in the right box. i've ran it h2h with an xxx in 1.25ft^3 sealed, 2 ft^3 tuned to 34hz and 2.5ft^3 tuned to 28hz. in the 2.5ft^3 box, it (the rl-p)was muddy, got low, didn't get loud and in general ******. but then again, so did the xxx and that was supposed to be it's optimum box. inthe 2ft^3 tuned to 34hz box, both subs came alive. the xxx was the louder of the two, but the rl-p was the cleanest. both subs hit real nice down low, very clear, no boominess at all...inthe 1.25ft^3 sealed, teh rl-p owned the xxx. again, the xxx was the louder, but it couldn't keep up down low at all, and was just suffocated in that box.
5) what's all this mean? simply put, the type r is a good spl sub. great. it's louder then the rl-p, but so are a few other subs. no biggie. sq wise, well, that needs to be taken with a grain of salt. different boxes, different results. different ears, different results. it all goes back to what a specific person feels sounds good to them...take this review for what it's worth. one guys opinion on three subs sound quality and his testing for output. is there a clear winner? yep, in this test anyway....the type r is the loudest of the three subs at 1700wrms. in this application...
