test tones for setting gains

i just spent about an hour reading up on how to set your gains on your ampifiers and i have a couple quesions.

the 2 amps i am going to set.. kicker zx1500.1 @ 2 ohms, and a Candence 3004 bridged to 2 channels at 4 ohms.

1st question. for the volts on the dmm do i want to set it according to rms or what its rated at. i didnt get a birthsheet for either amp but im sure the kicker is very underrated.

2nd. what test tones should i use to set each amp. i think 1000 for the comp amp but im not sure for my sub amp. my box is tuned to 38 hz and i want to get the most output out of it. also should it be at 0db -3 -6? i just want it to be as loud as it can

3rd. there are a bunch of other settings on my comp amp and i am not sure how i am supposed to set those.

4th. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.byramlabs.com/images/hi-res/SPE-dm-350a.gif&imgrefurl=http://www.byramlabs.com/product_info.php/products_id/8174&usg=__8nFY6-mwhee_Aqmx1VVLE7MDKj4=&h=600&w=600&sz=73&hl=en&start=3&um=1&tbnid=YQNaeguAaelYEM:&tbnh=135&tbnw=135&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dsperry%2BDM-350A%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DN

that is my dmm and i dont know how to use it very well. what holes should i put the plugs in to do the tests (both red and black) and what setting should i have it on.

thanks for your help.

1) if the amp is matched to the speakers, you set it to the rms value of the speakers.

50 or 60hz tone.

touch the red to the + and the black to the -. Make sure your are in an AC setting to correctly read the volts at the speaker terminals.

ok for setting the other gains on the comp amp it looks like its just a built in equalizer. 1 set for each 2 channels. how do you go about setting those gains?

there is a crossover, treb EQ, bass EQ, gains, all x2.

Put the black probe in COM (It should stay there for most tests)

Put the red probe in the hole marked V on the far right.

You would move the red probe to A to measure current (amperage) and Ohm to measure resistance.

On the dial the Red V with ~ is AC volts, thats what you need for setting gains. Set it to 200 for setting gains.

The other V with line with dots under it for DC voltage (like checking your battery).

As for your amp, might have to check the book. If theres a setting in particular, post up what it's called and we'll try to help.

For the tones, try 50 or 60 for subs, and 1000 for highs.

Hope that helps!
