Hang out at the local shop for a few hours and listen to cars, then go to another shop and do the same.

well some guy has one for sell for 350. amp has had 2 years on it, and sub has a year and a half. he said the sub wasnt used all the time.

also it has a free enclosure with it.It is 2.1^3 ft tuned to 35Hz

So what are you after SQ or car shaking bass? In "most" SQ setups, you barely notice the sub because it is tuned to blend naturally with the rest of the system. In other words, if one 12 isn't enough for you, SQ is NOT what you are after!

I think it's a better idea to invest in some nice front components and amp them. Cut your door so you can fit some 6.5" in there.

I bought some polks off ebay for the front. The one that did work sounded great, and my infinity 6x9s in the rear sound awesome aswell, considering they are both unamplified. I would just get some polk or infinity speakers plus an amp for them, then some kicker subs and amp. Wont be the best out there by any means, but will sound fine for what you want.

I know from experience that Hertz makes amazing speakers, but you'll need to find a dealer to get them from and they cost a little bit. My ARCs sound really good too. Some other brands I've heard are good are Image Dynamic, Polk, Morel, Focal, Boston Acoustic, and Phoenix Gold. Those are ones I can think of off the top of my head.
