ok, my parents are divorced and my mom is remarried-my dad agrees to pay for all of my dorm fees and 1/2 of my tuition (total of about $2,800). Well it was due monday the 8th and dad says he only agreed to pay for 1/2 tuition and that leaves about $1,200 for me, my mom and step dad to pay and thats money that we don't have. So my question is: Is it possible to take out a student loan for last semester? If so, my problems will be solved, thanks in advance!

probably wouldn't get $1200 for his system.

And i bet its harder to get student loans late like this. Explain the situation to the school and ask about a payment plan.

sure you could get any number of privet student loans and have up to 30g's in ur bank account... why you would want to is another thing...

financial aid + state+federal based student loans/grants

More than likely you would have to go with a private loan for cash this quick. Student loans from the federal govt require quit a bit of processing time. All you would really lose is

a)higher interest rate

b)grace period

c)tax deductability of the interest

I found this out the hard way and charged the final semester to my credit card.

i have to file my financial aide through my university before febuary 15 for it to go on file for the next school year. if i were you i'd definately file it. hell i got $2600 in grants i thought i'd never get because my parents make too much.

all together my parents that i live with (mom and step dad) make about $50,000ish a year so we don't qualify for fafsa stuff or financial aid or anything like that. Ironically we also we can't afford to pay for my school. My dad paid half of what he said he owed today so we owe around $1200 now. Im so pissed at my dad right now it's not even funny.......any more insight? and thanks again for the fast posts

How are your grades? You would be surprised how many schools have private grants available that aren't disclosed. If you're a good student they will want you to graduate from there so you will contribute to them later. Explain that you would hate to go to another school the last semester but will if you have to. Ask straight out if they have any way to lower that $1200 bill. Maybe you will get lucky.

what ways would they have to lower the bill? my grades are "decent" I stay kinda busy and got overwhelmed this semester so i finished with a 2.44 (yeah i know //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif )

im in ur same situation, parents make to much for financial aid but not enough to pay for my whole ride... goto your financial aid department and they can give you local numbers for privet loans which might not be to bad...

for me they gave me this number to some department that was set up for current uncp students who just need another thousand or so and it just adds onto your current pell grant (for me it was a pell grant, for you it might be whatever type of loan you got)

and the other dude was right about ways to "lower the bill" ... usually there are programs where you have to pay up to half of the fee's and you can wait till next semister to pay for the previous one ... but again just goto your financial aid department and talk to them, they can help you out

well all together my parents probably make about $90,000ish, and i still got half of my college payed for in grants. i wasn't even going to send my fasfa in, but i'm so glad i did.

not to threadjack but do you guys know what criteria is looked at when applying for a student loan, ex credit, income etc??
they todl em that fafsa looks at

1. your parents income

2. your income

3. # of kids in family

4. # of kids in college

there's some other stuff but she said those were the main ones.....
