Currently I have a Pioneer VSX-1015TX home receiver and I am want to upgrade my speakers. I have these Sony 7.1 speaker package (I got them cause they were cheap!).

What would you guys recommend on some good home speakers? Also the receiver is THX Select2 certified, what are the specs on the speakers needed to run it in THX mode?

Not really sure, probably abour 2-3 hundred a speaker. I have ben toying around with building my own speaker cabinets out of car audio speakers, but I am not sure.

"THX mode" is marketing technobabble.
What's your budget?

THX surround is pretty much just Dolby Digital.

THX surround EX and Dolby Digital EX are identical. The only difference is that it is now licensed solely by Dolby Labs.

if you want somethign somewhat budget that sounds great look at some Energy speakers. I have a full set i put together for my 6yr old daughter (yea shes spoiled) they are really clean sounding for music and theatre.

I thought THX mode changes the crossover points on everything to 80hz also?

?
That's absurd...
Hey I am just repeating what it said in my manual //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

And I have never really been able to figure out what THX really is, besides marketing. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

THX is a standard of theater design & construction, as well as technical specs for the equipment (especially the crossovers and LFE track reference levels).

ok, so what are the technical specs that the speakers must meet to be even considered for THX?

OK, after a bit of research, when THX mode is selected, it puts a global 80Hz, 24dB global crossover setting on all speakers.

The sub must be able to reproduce 20 Hz - 80 Hz and produce a SPL of atleast 105db with no distortion.

Rest of the speakers must be able to produce 80Hz - 20 KHz and have an almost flat response.

There is apparently a lot more but I am finding it difficult to find the exact specs on some of the requirements.
