Im looking to buy a semi auto pistol for self defense/protection and i know there are alot of gun hoarders here so can anyone recommend me a some good weapons to look at? I'm just looking for something compact, cheap, reliable, low recoil, etc etc. Doesnt need to be a big caliber, im not hunting elephant or anything. low price is one of the more important factors. is a 9mm glock my best bet?

You don't sound like you are very comfortable with firearms. If you want something you can carry, I would suggest a .38 revolver loaded with +p ammo. If you are looking for a home defense weapon, it's pretty hard to beat a 12 gauge shotgun.

If I'm totally off base here and you are comfortable with handguns, I'd suggest a .40 or .45 Glock. Just remember, YOU are the safety.

Regardless, for home defense, it's tough to beat a 12 gauge loaded with light shot, light shot, slug.

I like Glocks myself. A 9mm with some +p or +p+ rounds makes the Glock a potent little weapon. Of course, after getting it, I can't stress enough that you need to practice, practice, then practice some more. You should also run a minimum of 500 rounds of your carry ammunition through the gun per year just to make sure you are used to the recoil and can hit a target with it.

EDIT: Make sure you like the way the gun feels in your hand. Many people hate the feel of the Blocks and their European grip angle. The Springfield XD is another favorite of mine because it has the same grip as the 1911, which is my favorite handgun of all time. The only reason I don't own any XDs is due to their lack of aftermarket support. I heard that has since changed, but it did not exist in 2006-2007.

By the way, .38 shooting +P is as small as I would go, and that would be what I would recommend for someone who has never shot a handgun. You want knockdown power, if **** goes down you want to end it. It isn't unheard of for people to be shot point blank multiple times with a 9mm or .38 non +P and continue with their shennanigans. If you are comfortable with handguns, and a handgun is what you want, I'd completely suggest a .40 or .45 Glock. When **** goes down all you have to do is pull the trigger. A more complicated handgun... under stress you might not be able to defeat the safety etc. under stress. The main thing to remember is to not produce your firearm unless you intend to kill... and if you do to pull the trigger until the threat is defeated... i.e. the bad guy is motionless on the ground.

If you are looking for home defense, I'd still suggest a shotgun with light load, light load, slug. In a home environment **** goes down at close range, and a shotty will do the trick dramatically.

1911 is a wonderful handgun, but in my opinion somebody not particularly comfortable with guns would be better off with a Glock. Much less to think about in a stressful situation, just pull the trigger and keep pulling it until the bad guy stops moving. Heard too many stories of people failing to hit grip safety etc. on 1911's to suggest them to a newb. Not to mention, depending on the condition you carry/hold the firearm in, a newb might shoot themself.
