I'm planning on picking up an Alpine 9887 for a HU just FYI..

I keep hearing everyone talk about "going active."

I'm aware that means powering the tweeters and mids in a component set independently and using some other EQ or HU to cross them over rather than the included crossovers ( that come with the set )...

What else does it take? 4 channel amp, correct? Is it worth doing? Pros and cons?

search.
unfortunately, I'll have to agree.

The biggest part is going to be in the install and how you image the system

Running 'active' simply means having a dedicated channel of amplification for each individual speaker (tweeter, midrange, midbass, etc) or set of speakers playing a like passband (pair of midbass) while also allowing for individual adjustments of each channel independently via a sound processor.
