What is the difference between a 3 way set up and a 2 way set up?

What is the difference between an active and passive set up?

My car is an 06 bmw 325i with no rear speakers.. It only has a small mid and a tweeter in the front door.

Would a 3 way set up sound better than a two way?

Im assuming that a 3 way set up would be a mid, tweet, and mid woofer?

If i did decide to go with a 3 way set up where would i put the mid woofer?

Iv been trying to determine what size my factory h/k speakers are but some places say its a 6.5 inch ( the one in the door doesnt look anywhere near the size of a 6.5 ) and some say its like a 5 and 1/4 inch so does anyone know exactly how i would find out?

Lets say i have a 750$ - 1000.00$ budget, what are some of the brands and models i should be looking at? 2 way or 3 way? I want something loud and someting that has very good sound quality.

GREAT BOARD AND THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP GUYS!!!

u should have 10 speakers in total, i think. a girls bmw i worked on did....but i cant remember the sizes...

No mine only has a mid and tweet in each of the front doors and two behind the back seat.

Bump for more answers to my questions!

Ok i did a search and got some of my questions answered.

I still dont know what the difference between an active and passive setup is. Could someone please explain that to me??

Im leaning toward a 3 way system b/c im into really really good sound quality and i believe that having something to fill that gap between what the mids and tweets and the sub do.

Howw and where could i mount a mid woofer??

Ok i got the active vs. passive now.

My next question is should i run a 2 way with just mids and tweets or a 3 way with mids tweets and a midwoofer? If i do run a 3 way where should i put the midwoofer, custom kick panel?? Also i thnk i wana run these active.

If you didn't know what going active meant, you should definitely not start off with a 3-way front stage. Get good at working with a 2-way front stage and then progress from there. 3-way in the front will take a lot of work, such as proper tuning, speaker placement, fabrication (kickpanels and stuff), amplification, selecting crossover points, etc. 2-way is similar, but it'll be easier to work with.

Well im not gona be the one installing and tuning it, gona have my local car audio shop do that.

Do you think a three way would sound better? Where do the speakers go, there are only mids and tweets in the door?

Also how do i find out what factory size my speakers are??

Ok so my local car audio shop recomended some bostan speakers that retail for 1000.00$, im not sure of the model number.

Do you guys think that bostan setup would be the best for the money?

Also the crutchfield site says that i have a 4 inch mid but every other site iv seen says i have a 6.5??

If i do only have a 4 inch mid, then what are some good speakers that i should be looking at? There arnt any speakers in the rear doors but there are two coax's behind the head rest in the rear.
