SoloX Vs. Jackhammer?

seems like most neo magnet equipped drivers are leaning towards the SQ side of things more than all out burp machines. (Aura, Focal, tweets and the likes). I heard there's a new SPL sub from beyond audio (or was that another brand?) that uses neo magnets, but that's the only one I heard so far, and can they really be considered mass produced?
Any specific reason why, except price?
The sub you speak of is from shocker...and that's a good example of a waste of neo that is seriously NOT needed...but we won't go there.

Neo just isn't the industry standard, it looks small...and it seems that many of the people in the industry go for the "bigger is better and therefore always louder" markeneering shceme //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif.

If you didn't know what it was you were looking at, and saw this tiny motor vs. this big TC 4hp (or equivilant size) knockoff..i'd guarantee you'd probably go for the "beefier" looking speaker //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif....

If i didn't know better and i hadn't done as much reading over the years that i have done, i would too!

More importantly.....that is the mindset the consumer has. Dan Wiggins has, in the past, made a comment that the Brahma motor could have been much smaller than what it is.....but it wouldn't have had the "wow" factor that many people go after. So yeah, it was mainly a marketing thing to give the consumers what they wanted (subs with large backsides that on-lookers can //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/drool.gif.b5e863e893038027711d4402f340dad0.gif over)

the catch to the neo motors (specifically Mike's designs) is that they are geared towards the serious competitors. The one's who know (or pretend to) the difference it'll make. Regardless of slug size.

I don't see the average enthusiast buying up a $1k + woofer, such as the neo sigs. Hell, how rare are the TRF's, DD 99's, and so on... in the 'common market'?

Neo offers a number of advantages... it's just too new to be cost effective as yet. There are many a promising designs out there for neo motors already. But they are only designs as yet. As Nick said, it's not industry standard.

I've read a few things here and there //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

A 10.5" ferrite slug can be outdone by a 8.5" neo slug... with the right design.

Just my $0.02.

....Edit: Also - It would cost just about the same as the regular strontium motor assembly...but because "bigger" is always better - Neo isn't the industry standard...i really wish it was //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif Neo is verah koo //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif

My Neo-slugged Illusion woofers were pretty cost effective //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif Not exactly your SPL-oriented driver though

considering the thread is regarding someone's jackhammer & solo-x wet dream.... I'd consider it an SPL related convo. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

The shocker sig's are anything but cost effective. I dont think that your Ill's have triple stack 8" slugs on them.... or do they?

Wether or not it is necessary is a debate for another day. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

*edit* so what the BL rated at on you neo motor? whats the winding like? 30ga aluminum? LoL

I had them modded for quad 10" slugs //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/up2something.gif.dd110ecf3ae4b76050d87598f2f8de7c.gif

ye'g'xactly.

The is much more motor force in the spl oriented (read: big) motors. Not necesarily the same level of control though... or flux density, depending.

That Neo sig wouldn't cost anywhere near as much if it were done the way neo is supposed to be done...(Again, what i refered to earlier - Bigger = Better and therefore always louder mentality...is NOT necessarily a good thing)

Ill guarantee you could take 2 of the 6 slugs and arrange them in such a way in a ceratin style gap and get more flux density out of them..and the same Bl

Wasted cost...but we REALLY do not need to get into this discussion

Too much BL can be a bad thing...there are many other factors that go along with it...an overmotored BL wh0re isn't necessarily "louder" or more "SPL" oriented...by anymeans...

It's just a peaky thing that you have to mass the bloody hell out of to get the Fs down and raise the Q up...so you can play below 80Hz and keep the thing together...

(edited a few parts)

I'd agree... across the board.

its fun throwing neodymium iron boron magnets past eachother in pretty close range and watch them change direction, rush towards eachother and fall to the ground. or throwing them past a metal object (within reason) and having it attach. god the things we do at radioshack when we are bored //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
