So my dad bought me a car for the big 18

I could not agree more. The "struggle" is what teaches them that life aka the "real world" doesn't normally give handouts like free cars.
struggle teaches them about the real world? WOW what a way to treat your CHILD. So make your kid struggle for everything and claw his way to a mediocure job because he had to work all his life to even get to school. GOOD IDEA:crazy:

You can have a responsible kid that knows the real world without depriving him. Why not make the kids life a bit easier while he is bettering himself in school? Why not buy a car so that he doesnt have to work full time and go to school full time? Why not set them on a good path where they are comfortable and able to succeed? Don't parents usually want a better life for their kids? Why make it hard on them.

Everyones logic is a bit flawed, and probly stems from negelct of your own parents. My parents funded all 7, yes 7 of us with means of transportation, and an education. All 7 have great jobs, and own atleast 1 home. I guess none of us know the real world, we are just home owners, with college educations, jobs, and investments on top of that.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

If struggling at a young age readies kids for the future maybe parents should start starving their children. Had my parents starved me at a young age I would have been better prepared for it when I was starving and broke in college...

by what I have read first/last page

Kid got new car dont know what it is. everyone is flaming him for parents buyin him car.

Parents never bought first car I bought a 81 Monte for $250 and it ran/drove dad helped me pull the junk 267 and build a 350 for it(split parts cost with me) I have always bought my cars my systems my parts besides that been on my own since I was 17 and doin good in my eyes

Wow some of you people need to grow the **** up. Your prob well into your 20s hell maybe even 30s and your *****ing about this? This kids just happy he got a car, same type of thread if someone says "Oh look everyone i just bought 2 18s" do u ever see people jump in and start screaming SPOILED BRAT!? no you dont, so stfu. Buncha jealous kids thats what it is. My friends dad makes well over 200k a year, his sister now makes over 80k a year just out of college, she got a 350z as her first car and her dad paid for her apartment and now she has her own house at 24 and your trying to say she hasnt learned any lessons in life? Talk about retarded. Seriously stop and think for a second. Dont always have to be a player hater in life just because you had it hard.

Because I want them to be able to survive just fine if all that was gone. Could they feed themselves in the absence of the current system?

If the kid made a thread in the lounge about how his parents bought him two 18s, I'd call him a braggart as well.

It has nothing to do with jealous. It has much to do with how people should conduct themselves.

And since parents and 18's were mentioned...

congrats on being spoiled. I bought my truck when I was 14, and I still drive it. Know what my parents got me as a graduation gift, for finishing in the top 25 in my class? Luggage. ****ing, luggage. How about you go out, earn some money, and purchase a vehicle yourself, pay the taxes, and insurance on it, then tell us how you feel.

Another reminder of why I dont like you.

Jealous Hater..

so make things difficult on your kids all their lives, just in case right?//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wow.gif.23d729408e9177caa2a0ed6a2ba6588e.gif Instead of pave them a nice path for success... great logic

" Well we might not have the money one day, so I am going to treat you like we are poor son and make you struggle through school and life and MAYBE you will make it"

making your flesh and blood suffer, is no sure ticket to success either, so if it doesnt work out, you just ****ed up your own child. Gamble with a kids future, now thats great parenting.

I don't think he was meaning to brag about it though.I just think he's a young 18 year old thats exited to get a car.
Honestly, I don't either. Many posts have called my perspective jealous, when I do not want, nor care to want any material possessions this fellow may acquire by virtue of being his parent's child. I do think that those who have not been taught how to do without things in order to focus efforts on higher priorities will not be successful in the long run.

I have seen too many instances of children who get things have troubles when their parents die off (when kids are 18-20ish) and they don't know how to make it when no one in the world gives a fuck about them. These situations may be unfortunate, but they are very much real. It is not the fact that the parent bought the car for the son, it's that he didn't teach him how to negotiate price, create a bill of sale, what to look for on the title, how to inspect the car to ensure that it's roadworthy, etc. Did they teach him the steps involved in the home buying process? Does he know how to amortize a loan? Is he familiar with how the family does their taxes? I was fortunate enough for my parents to teach me all this and force me to go through the struggle of learning while they were watching. To just be handed those things can cause great difficulty when learning to do for self. You'd be surprised how many people out there given things don't concern themselves with how much they pay in interest when financing a car, instead concerning themselves with their capability to make a certain monthly payment.

I think you are mispercieving what I am telling you. I didn't say obstruct the path of the children. I did say ensure that they struggle a bit.

Ever watch nature shows? The parent is standing by while the child are out there trying to capture prey. The adult can easily kill they prey and feed it to the child, but no. The parent ensures the child can capture the prey on it's own, so that it can sustain it's own life. The parent knows that it MUST instill this into the child so that he can survive without them.

I do not think it is a gamble at all.
