I dont know exactly what i want to spend, and i would like to DIY my speakers...

I can soldier and follow directions, and build whatever cabinets are necessary to house everything.

is it going to be attainable to do 5.1 for under a thousand dollars?>

and have it sound pretty good?

as far as the sub stage im not sure what speaker i am going to use, but it will be a single 10 or a 12 tuned really low, so ill need something good for that as well.

another question i have is would it be okay to use cat5 for my speaker cable if im only running 30-50 watts per channel?

as far as the reciever goes, i believe my TV has optical out, so i dont need HDMI pass-through or anything like that...

so yesterday i saw an onkyo tx-sr506 for 160 bucks new @ CC so i went ahead and bought it.

its got all the connections that i think that i will ever need, plus the ability to Bi-amp the fronts which should add a nice touch to things.

now what?

still wanting to do 5.1 and build the cabinets myself. what should i be looking for in an amplifier for my subwoofer stage? looking just to push it with a couple hundred watts, nothing crazy just yet.

Get some vintage speakers (check your local craigslist and audiokarma.org) and run em off of a dj amplifier or two and use a 5.1 receiver with hdmi as a preamp.

I built a complete system for about $500.

i moreso need a sub amp than a sub...i heard a friends and his setup was only around 80 watts and it slammed nicely

i want more than that, but not much

a mj18m and a plate amp would do really good, or if you dont have the space just go with a 12 or 15, under $1000 is easily obtainable

id like something that i can flush mount into the enclosure, i already have enough crap visible on the entertainment center. the subwoofer enclosure will go underneath an end table, i have roughly 4.5-5 cubes to work with, i havent measured it just yet.

there was one on there using 4- 6.5" subs and a bash500 plate amp that looked pretty cool. Thing fit right under the couch, so you'd never see it.
