Single 10" sub for spl

Hi guys,

Just a quick intro. I have an acura tl, 04, and want to install a lot of spl in a small space. I have about 400rms@4ohms to work with on my old school mtx 2150x. I've had this thing running three jl 12" w0 at 2.66ohms and it hit hard. After that it ran three old school mtx 15s (5000's) and they hit even harder but probably due to being in a bronco.

Now I have a family and my acura TL. I also fly RC helis but I have the itch to hear bass again. I still have my amp. I can't give up a whole lot of trunk, so I'm thinking somewhere around 1 to 1.5 cube feet. I'm really hoping to make a box because I enjoy it and have the tools.

So to sum it up:

Stock power in Acura TL

Listen to mostly hip hop

i like the deep basss that makes it hard to breathe.

MTX 2150x 400w rms at 4ohms, more if i go lower.

want to do ported, slotted?

Should I go with a 10, or even an 8?

Please give suggestions because I have been out of the scene for a while as you can see by the speakers I listed above! haha

Now I know to get hard to breathe bass I need more space, kind of like motors, "no replacement for displacement". But I want to hear if you have any good ideas!

Thanks and happy new year!

I have done a fiberglass box before, but don't really want to get into that for this one.

So through my research I found the Sundance SA8. Seems like it could do a lot in a tuned box. but as a curve ball, there is a sa10 for $80 close to me on CL.

You guys really don't think that 400watts on a 8" would do it for power?

The SA10 on 400w would surprise you if it's in a good box and it'd handle a lot more

I think the SPL title is throwing us off a bit. 400 in a DD would be fine for most.

I ran 500 in my wifes' last two cars and it was good. Pair of sealed JL 10w1's sealed and now a pair of Incriminator audio 10's ported.

To add to your "no replacement for displacement" adage, "space makes bass". The exception to the displacement adage is the t-line enclosure where you can get loud with a small woofer on little power. Unfortunately the enclosure necessary is huge, so that's out of the question.

Just to clarify, you do mean Sundown, right?

With the space you want to give up the biggest you could do is one 10" ported or one 12" sealed. If you're looking for SPL do the 10" ported tuned at like 35Hz. If you go with the SA-10 they recommend 1.0-1.25 ft^3 @ 35hz. They're rated at 600W RMS but as other have said they can take more.

Provided you build a solid box with the right tuning and enough port area you should find it acceptable. Granted, like you said it's not going to make it difficult to breathe or anything, but it should be nice.

Again, thanks for the reply. This board is a lot friendlier to newbs than most.

I guess I meant SPL as how loud it gets. I hope I'm using the term correctly. I see people hitting 135-140 dbs with a 8" sub. I hope that is achievable for me or am I dreaming with a single 10 with my amp? I'm not saying that 135 is my goal, but it seems like that is an achievable one if i made the right box. I know my amp is underrated and i've seen it do magic with three 12s.

Can you help me desing my box. The last box I made was with pvc pipe as my ports, 10 years ago. I'm hoping to make a MDF 3/4 box with the slot looking port.

I've read on the sa10 and it seems like they want 1-1.25ft3 ported. But that doesn't really define it really well for me. Can someone post a plan for a box for the sa10?

I know you guys answer these questions daily and they get old, but i appreciate it. Happy holidays!

Sundown's recommendation for ported volume is how much internal volume the box will have after accounting for displacement. The displacement is the space the driver takes up, the space the port takes up, and the space the walls and bracing take up You'll subtract these from the gross volume to get the net volume.

Figure out the dimensions for the area you want to stick the box.

Download the Torres Tuning Calculator and play around with it to find a design that works for you: Torres' Box Tuning Calculator - Updated 8/18 - Subwoofers / Enclosures - SMD Forum

Torres does a ton of calculations on the fly and accounts for all the displacements you enter.

As far as port area goes you'll want something like 12-16 square inches per cubic foot - too little and you'll get port noise.

As far as port ratio goes you'll want something like 1:4 or less - too narrow and you'll get also get noise.

If you want an A+ design there are a bunch of designers on here that'll sell you a custom design plans for a modest fee.

Granted I drive a ext cab Tacoma but my single 10" goal is to try to hit 150....

Nice box. Is there a reason you made it out of teh nice ply? I usually make mine out of the high density MDF.

I downloaded the calculator but can't run it because all i have is a company computer that doesn't allow .exe files. I'll see if IT will let me run it on monday.

In the meantime I noticed that Sundance posted a sketchup file for the box. Does this seem reasonable? It's a lot more trunk space than I wanted to give up, but I want to do it right. I'm going to make a mockup carboard box see if i can live with giving up the space for a week. that is if you guys think the box makes sense.

It's sundown lol... Baltic birch is a lot lighter than mdf and I did not build because I don't have the proper tools... It should be coming in the mail in a few more days

Its Sundown. This aint a cowboy movie.

Same strength if not stronger than MDF, easier to work with and EXTREMELY light in comparison. No sonic difference. Lets say a 16 cubic feet box for two 18s can be lifted up by one person when built with birch ply. Dont see it happening with mdf and no chance in hell with HDF unless you are in world strong man comps.

So I've read a lot over the last few days. I'm definitely not unique in wanting a sundown. Seems like that's the go to now. The other sub that has peeked my interest is the incriminators- seem to be liked.

Anyway, the above picture of the box, is it right? I've read of plenty of bad box designs on this site over the last couple days

Id look at an American Bass XFL series or a Sound Qubed HDS 310..Both subs are pretty brute and 1k-1500 rms power really gets them moving and sounding great/hitting the lows pretty nicely for the money..Just my 2 cents and experiencing/running
