single 10 or two 10's for punchy bass?

I've been thinking that I would only need a single 10 inch sub (Alpine type s?) to replace my old bazooka 10. I want punchy tight bass and listen to Rock mainly. I happened into a pawn shop today and they let me throw in a pair of xtant 10" subs in a sealed box into my trunk and try it out. I tried it first with just one 10 hooked up. Not bad. But when I hooked up both 10's it was SOOOO much better.

I was impressed and I know that these werent great subs.

So my question is: if I want that punchy bass where you feel the thump do I need to go with a pair of 10's or will the right single 10 do it for me? I'm currently running a profile msx 600 mono amp (300w @ 4 ohms, 410w @ 2 ohm).

Will my amp run a pair of Alpine type S?

You can likely achieve the same results with a very good single sub, as opposed to 2 lesser subs. It doesn't really matter either way, as long as you make sure the sub(s) will wire to the amp to give the full potential of the amp...in your case, you would want a single DVC 4 ohm sub, or a pair of SVC 4 ohm subs. And also, make sure you put the sub(s) in the proper size enclosure.

WHy 10's? I've heard numerous times that for the best punhcy tight bass you should go no bigger than 10's. plus I know 12's take more power...and I'm only pushing a possible 410 watts @ 2 ohms. So thats why I'm looking at 10's. HOpefully thats right.

Will my amp power a decent rated 12? Like an Alpine type R? I think the R's are rated at 500 w rms.

There are plenty of 12's that will work well off of that power.

I've heard it quite a few times actually. From sales guys locally from different shops. Well..what they said was that a 10" sub would be able to keep up better with quick bass needed for rock....and it should sound better overall for rock.

I'd like to keep the whole thing below $200...aiming at the $150 mark.

I was just SO impressed with the 2- 10" xtants I heard the other day in a sealed enclosure. ....and I know extants arent that good. The whole setup had that punch I was looking for....but only hooking 1 of them up didnt.

Squeak, your not the same as squeak12 are you? I was told to pm sqeak12 about an enclosure but havent heard back yet.
