I have (3) JL 12w6v1's that are ported in a 7 cube box. They are firing up and the port is in the back of the box by the hatch. I heard that V1's should not be ported, is this true? Are they better sealed? Before i got a new box, i had them in a sealed 3 chamber box. But, with the ported box they sound way better and louder. I am only feeding each sub about 200w rms. They are happy and not abused. just let me know if you think it would be better to port these subs or have them sealed. thanks.

I think thats the answer right there. If you've had them in both, and to your ear it sounds better in the ported box, then why bother considering sealed?

i had a treo of 10s in a sealed down-firing box in my truck. i was thinking of going ported when i had them. but like you, i was told not to port w6v1s... guess i should have tried it...

funny you should say that...about not porting w6s. Reason being is because the local JL dealer here sells them in a combo in a ported box lol...

They probably do that because all the kids want loudness and not quality, so they would sell easier as opposed to being in a sealed box.

Is running them in a ported box bad for them? I agree, the SQ is better with them sealed, But, Ported = loudness. Cause I have had these subs for a while now, I figured if i ported them, they would wearout faster so i can get new subs. But, no the subs like it even more. yeah only 200w rms and i can send them 1700w max if i turned it up all the way. Boy, these subs are nice! I definately got my monies worth on these. They might even out live my car..lol...What subs are comparable to the 12w6v1?? Like RE SR 12's? Something that will be an even swap as far as wattage and all that. A sub that is 300w rms and 600w max, i know they dont make dual 6 ohm subs no more, but, my amp can handle a 2 ohm load, so (3) dual 4's would be nice when these w6's crap out on me. thanks.

Those are great older subs. If you don't abuse them they'll last pretty close to forever, too. They are OK in a ported box, but they want a really big one tuned really low to sound very good. They should absolutely murder the lows in the right box, but you won't have a trunk left at all. They also don't need much power to get as loud as they can. They were designed back in the day when 400w going to the subs was a pretty good amount.
