should my kicker be getting this hot?

i got a new kicker 650.4 i have the gains set below half and it gets hot. is this normal? its not covered or anything. should i put some fans on it? thanks guys- doug

is it hot enough where it burns to touch or just warm? try moving it somwhere else in your setup to get more air.

gets hot that i cant hold my hand on it. its not in the sun or anything.

make sure you have clean ground connections, good contact to bare shiny metal

well the ground is to the second battery in the back.

i have the same amp and after an hour or so of playing at high volume it gets so hot that you could fry and egg off it... not even exaggerating... mine isn't covered at all and has plenty of open space around it but doesn't get any direct air flow.

it does have a termal shutoff which i found out at a tool show. i was tailgating with the volume cranked up and after maybe an hour and a half to 2 my mids and highs turned off and the amp was a few degrees away from glowing red.

i'll be buying one of those stinger crossflowing fans... they're on ebay for like 35 bucks shipped...

edit: i just realized you have a kx and mine is a zx, but they're pretty much identical internally...

my old sx would do that. it had a digital thermometer on it and i topped it out at 151 degrees bumpin hard durin spring break. looked back shocked and shut it down as fast as i could. it never gave me any trouble after that tho.

kicker amps are builtproof.
