Should I upgrade my amp? 2x Infinity Kappa Perfect 12.1s MTX thunder 6500D

Hello,

I have my old system from 2001 and I was looking to hook it up in my new car. The kappa perfects 12.1 (2 separate sealed q logic boxes) sounded really good while hooked up to the MTX Thunder 6500D running 250 RMS to each. The subs spec sheet says they can handle 350 RMS. Would this be a noticeable difference?

Furthermore when I was talking to the guy at the audio shop (I liked him and respected his opinion but feel that the lack of competing products in his store leads him to this recommendation) he suggested that I go with an Alpine amp. He had a PDX and a lesser version. He was suggesting to get a 1000 watt and just "tune it down". These 1000 watt alpine amps look they are around 350 to 400 and I was not really looking to spend that much on an amp upgrade.

I couldn't find a source of information that really said alpine was better or worse for any reason. Can anyone recommend a solid amp for around $200? I could be convinced to go with a $400 but I wasn't sure that there was a substantial difference in products.

My goal is to have very tight BASS that hits hard but SQ is most important. Generally will be listening to dubstep/house music.

From experience with those subs and that amp, I will tell you that your getting about 750-800w out of your amp right now (they're very conservatively rated and at 12v) so your subs are seeing about the max RMS rating already. They can definitely handle a bit more though. You would probably see a sound quality improvement by switching to a nice 800-1200w class A/B amp or a good quality class d. Those MTX amps were great for a lot of efficient power in a small footprint but they have poor SQ in my opinion. Very boomy, and those subs deserve better. Those are probably my favorite subs I've ever owned!

An nice used old school amp like a Phoenix Gold, or Orion HCCA 250 or 275 would work well.
