Should I stick with stock 6x9's in the front or change???

I just bought a 2007 Camry. Looks like its got 6.9 speakers all around. I currently have a set of Rainbow 5 1/4 components that I love. Is it possible to retro fit these in this car or am I going to have to go with some sort of 6x9 component in this? Can you get good front SQ out of 6x9 components? I remember reading somewhere that becuase of the oval shape you cant get accurate bass/mids.

Speaker adapters in the front and then use the back for fill. I bought a pair of alpines to replace the back, something cheap and good for fill. One of the tweets was bad so I opted to just put the stock back on. I have them filling between 60-200 and it brings an ok amount of midbass. Most people will tell you here that its not worth replacing them / not necessary to hook them up but I would just use them for fill and leave them alone. If you insist on replacing them then i suggest adapters and 6 1/2s

don't use plastic adapters - they are awful. make your own out of sturdy materials and buy a deadener door kit. don't forget closed cell weatherstripping foam between the door panel and the speaker, between the speaker and the baffle, and between the baffle and the door.

Thanks guys. I talked to the place that will do the install and they said they could get the 5 1/4 to fit. That makes me feel very good because I love those speakers...

I just wish the camy aimed the speakers up towards me like my Grand Prix does.

ask for deadening on the speaker baffle. makes a huge different when the baffle + deadener + door is 1" thick

I have a camry and I put Alpine SPX-13REFS in the door, it is a 5.25" woofer, they fit fine with the brackets I bought off of Crutchfield. Haha, and as I see the trend follows, I also have the type-r 6x9s in my rear for rear fill, pretty nice price on them. I had to custom make speaker brackets for them though because the stock speakers have a weird shape.

Thanks for the pic. So how far on the "inside" of the door did you go? Also, how would you describe the difference in sound? I wish I could do a comparison of with and without to hear the difference. If I remember right...deading is quite expensive.

Interesting. So the rears arent stock 6x9's? What year is your Camry? (I dont have the car yet. I bought it Friday and havent had time to pick it up. Its 40 miles away).

Yeah, my rear 6x9s are now the type-r ones. 2002. I believe it's the same generation 02-06.

i do as much of the inside as possible (i.e. reach). I still need to seal up the factory openings and add more to the inside. The difference is staggering. A properly deadened and sealed door is crucial to getting good preformance out of a door speaker. without it, it sounds like a tin can (because it is!).

the baffle construction is equally important. you don't want the driver wasting energy and exciting the door panel - that will give you modes and resonances.

that baffle is 3/4"MDF with two layers of deadening, then two layers of deadening on the door around the speaker. We used Raammat BXT II (nice stuff).
