Should I buy 2 ohm or 4 ohm

So, I got a new car and for a present to myself i would like to get a subwoofer. For the amp, I am planning on purchasing either a Kicker ZX750.1 or ZX1000.1 mono amp. For subs I am planning on buying one Kicker S12L7. The 2 ohm sub and 4 ohm sub both cost the same amount of money, so I'm not sure which one to get.

If im correct, when I hook up the 4 ohm it will become a 2 ohm? Also, is one better for SQ and one better for loudness?

Also, if anyone has any reccomendations for a different sub/amp then I am open as I havent bought anything yet.

What do you want from the subs? You want as loud as possible or do you want it to accurately reproduce the music being played? I'm gonna guess the first one. If that's the case the kickers will do just fine. For either of the amps you mention, you want the dual 4 ohm sub. The manual for the sub will give you a diagram of how to wire it to present a 2 ohm load to the amp. If the system is only for personal enjoyment, I'd get the 750.1 since that one is cheaper and the difference in power isn't audible.

thank you for the response. If i go with the kicker 750.1 amp, will it be sufficient to run two 12 subs (s12L7) if i decide to upgrade? i would like to purchase a qlogic box (type 2) so i can have a both sealed / ported options. are they good boxes for my setup?

if you going to run 2 l7s in the future definitley get the kx1000.1

you should look into either the 12 r 15 solobaric. those things can take tremendous ower and it is only 1 sub so you can spend more on an amp.

but the solox's are expensive.

just my 1 cent

IIRC that amp isnt 2 ohm stable. If you are hell bent on those amps, get the 4 ohm model and wire it down to 2 ohms.

If I were you (and I'm not) I know the 1200 watt Brutus because it is 1 ohm stable and room to wire up another sub should you decide to upgrade.

As poorly described above, you have to decide now what you want: one sub or two. The coils that you need for each is different if you want to run a Kicker amp. The Kicker amps are only 2 ohm stable so if you plan to run a pair of subs, get the dual 2 ohm subs. If you only want the one get dual 4 ohm.

to sum everything in here up.

First, decide if you want 1 or 2 subwoofers, your first sub purchase depends on it.

Second, (1) Kicker Dual 4 can be ran at 2ohm, (1) Dual 2 can be at 1 or 4ohm

Third, (2) Dual 4's can be ran at 1 or 4ohms, (2) dual 2 can be at .5 or 2ohms

Fourth, your amp is 2ohm stable

Fifth, if your buying two, I'd go bigger. These subs handle power fine. You should have 750 or so on each sub, and that's even being conservative.

In other words

If your sticking with one sub, get the Dual 4

If you get two, get dual 2's. You'll deal with less power at first until you get your second when you can wire them to a 2ohm load.

Dual 4's if your getting 2 subs then u can wire them to 1ohm. wish i had done that now i have to spend all this extra cash to power dual 2's adequately or i have to get an amp that runs at .5ohms with out getting hot (which i have done)

thank you for the help. i believe i will buy:

(1) kicker 750.1 amp

(1) s12L7 sub (DVC) 4 ohm

-connect / wire the sub to the amp at 2 ohm

i already have a kicker amp wiring kit (4 awg) and monster cables SW cable (400 series or something). I est. the amp to cost 200 and the sub to cost 200. does anybody have reccomendations on a prefab box? i was looking at the qlogic type 2 because it can be sealed/ported, although judging by the kicker specs for the sub it looks as though for a ported application the box is too small. Can i remedy this by putting in polysorb (?sp?), or should I build my own box.

alright, I just bought the 750.1 amp ($214.40 new) and the kicker S12L7 dual 4 ohm ($180.79 new). thanks for the help, now i just need a box!
