Setting gain with digital multimeter

Hey i heard you could use a digital multimeter ans put it in the speakers terminals on the amp and play a 50hz testtone and set the gain until the digital multimeter reads a certain voltage around like 36. Is this correct? I have a profile ap1000m and 2 infinity 1230w's getting 250watts rms each.

i have two digital multimeters at my house and they dont work to set the gains on my amp. for some reason, i have to use my analog multimeter. weird.

would it be sqrt(500*2) since 500 watts rms x 2 subs? then that would equal 31.6?

Yes it's sqrt(500x2). But the 2 stands for 2 ohm, not 2 subs.
