Set of 8's

I have a 99 Celica GT Hatchback that I want to install some 8" subs in. What I'm going to do is take the rear deck out (it moves with the hatch of course) and make it into an enclosure using fiberglass. It's going to be two 8" subs in a common, sealed chamber from 1 cu ft to 1.5 cu ft. I'm looking at what subs I want to buy and I don't want to spend more than $200 for the set. The first sub that pops up in my mind is an RE8 but I'm more than willing to try anything else. RE8's aren't exactly the best looking woofers out there. I listen to rock and metal most of the time. I plan on fabricating some sealed 6.5" midbass enclosures to replace the rear speakers, which are above the arm rests in the back seat. Up front there are already 6.5" components but they're mounted free air in the stock 7" location, so I'm going to find some spare door panels and fabricate a sealed 6.5" enclosure for some CDT's or Rainbows. All that said, I'd appreciate as much low end as possible with a couple of 8's in a sealed enclosure.

I tried to find the website for the Great 8" Challenge, but could only find the 12" one. Is that info still up anywhere?

These are some of the subs I'm looking at. They're all on woofersetc.com but only because they have a large selection:

CDT Audio EF-80

RE Audio RE8

JL Audio 8W0

Image Dynamics IDV.3-D4

Diamond Audio D308D4

MTX T5508-44

Memphis 15-MC84

If you've got other suggestions feel free to post a link with some specs. I have zero experience with 8" subs so I'm looking for a lot of input. One more thing, my car is red and black, red paint, black rims, black interior with trim painted red... so nothing that clashes horribly with the existing scheme. The rear deck will be painted either red or black depending on what looks best with the woofers.

i would look into the soundplinter 8's but i think they are out of stock still sadly. some beefy 8's!

if you think 8 's move quicker or something, your wrong. i listen to the same music you do and i have a 15 in a large sealed box and it does the job and then some. i think you can get more room out of that hatch as well to fit a 12 ported or 15 sealed.

id recommend si mag, rlp 12- 15, or a d6

The thing is I want to keep my trunk free. I'm selling some subs right now, a set of Pioneer Premier TSW-3004SPL's in a custom slot-vent enclosure. They take up the ENTIRE trunk of that car. I might be able to fit a small back pack in there, but other than that... Plus the box weighs well over 100 pounds with the subs installed. I about kill myself getting it in and out of the car (and up a flight of stairs into my apartment!)

"Tightness" and transient response don't necessarily go hand in hand with diameter and I know that, but to get some subs in the rear deck and still be able to lift the hatch without visiting the gym, they've gotta be 8's, and it's gotta be fiberglass (which I'm good at!) Weight is going to be a factor, no 30 pound 8" subs!

That being said, I already looked at the RL-I 8 series and I agree that they're beefy. I think a little too beefy, the magnet is about the same size as the cutout! Also they go for around $200 each. I think it would be great to have one in a sealed enclosure in the trunk, but not in a rear deck that moves with the hatch. Those gotta weigh a ton!

Also, I didn't know Rainbow made 8" subs.... Any Rainbow fans/dealers here? What's the street price for the vanadium and profi lines?

Who deals AudioQue? I'd like to see some prices.

I'm being pretty strict with myself about the $200/pair limit. I have a bad tendency to overspend on these types of things.

I like the price on those! How much do you know about the company? The surround/cone/basket/motor on AudioQue's higher end line look a LOT like many other subs out there...the stitched surround, wire leads instead of terminals, etc. For example, the new American Bass line and DD lines. I'm sure they share a build house with a lot of other independent manufacturers, but are those just the same old, same old - different color scheme and logos?

aq is good stuff

it is discussed on here all the time

the new high end sub is made in china but the other models are in the usa

and the customer service is close to perfect

call them and u will usually speak directly with the owner

its a solid woofer from every aspect

Anybody know how much....

The AQ weighs...

The AA assassin weighs...

An RE-8 weighs...

Any of the other subs that have been mentioned, weight...

With that much airspace...I'd go with two RE 10's...they are impressive in small sealed boxes and will give you a little more than what the 8's have to offer....
The rear deck in the car is sufficiently large to fit 10's, but I'm worried about the weight. I don't want to have to use a broomstick to hold the hatch up!

Who makes the truebass 8?
