Set gain with or without knob in?

Should I set my AQ1200D's gain with the knob plugged in or not? I heard many different methods. Some people say that when you set it w/o and then put it in, it screws with the gain settings, or something like that.

remote gain knobs, simply give you a range of gain within the setting on the unit.

Set it iwthout the remote, and then when you plug it in, you are capable of changing it within the range of the original setting.

The remotes do not override the hardwares setting.

I like to be able to adjust the amount of bass I have while I'm driving. Sometimes I have a headache and just want some smooth jazz free of bass, lol. (Call me crazy)
