Searching for a particular sub, specifics included!

Sounds like you want something with a lightweight, fast moving and efficient cone.

I like aluminum like my T3 TSSs but not everyone it a fan of aluminum due to possible ringing at high bass notes.

Carbon fiber and polypropelene are good materials too.

Well, you fellas gave me a LOT of material to work with which I vastly appreciate. I spent half the nite researching all your suggestions. After gathering info specific to my parameters and scouring the interwebs for reviews and opinions, I believe my best choice will be the RE SE12-D4.

Thanks for all your replies. I'm stoked to get my hands on one and hook it up.

How's this for a necrobump.

Been doing some amp research here of late and wanted to post a follow up to this thread. I just discovered I never finished it off. My bad, that's a poor first thread effort.

Went with the RE Audio sub in a ~.9cu/ft sealed enclosure and have been incredibly happy with it. Primarily I listen to electronica, the vast majority of which is drum & bass. So, I need lows but a quick response time. And this sub has always performed very well. Love it, and still going strong.

lol, good to hear...... so, how do like it compared to the sound of the old polypropylene jl's? i like aluminum and polymer cones for electronica. lightweight cones give you that nice sweep response

Keep in mind I'm a bit of a novice so if I sound like one, well, you get my point. ;-)

The type of sound I was searching for was similar to JL's from the late 90's - early 2000's. The uber clear and robust low end, even at low volumes, always spoke to me. However, I recall a close friend adamantly insisting that a JL would never perform at it's max potential without the perfect box - for both the sub and vehicle. That part was key.

Why mention this? Cause I knew that I'd never achieve that kind of sound in a 1cu/ft box listening to electronica, maybe just a portion of it. Back then I was listening to a grip of hip hop so my needs have changed. My JL experiences of yesterday wouldn't be the perfect fit for drum and bass. Those ported 12's and 15's in my buddy's cars would have been far too laggy IMO. A sealed 10 probably would be the grits, maybe ported 8's? Hard to say.

Speculating on response and accuracy aside (which I think I'm right about), the SPL of the RE isn't quite as robust as the old JL. But it is certainly deep enough to completely fill the interior of my car with a rich, warm bass that will quickly snap back and forth between notes, even in the peppiest of drum and bass tracks. What's been compromised in overall volume has been amended with quality and accuracy.

So, my starting point of old school JL's was a bit apples to oranges of what I wound up with but I've certainly achieved what I was looking for with the RE.

Finally pushed her too hard and blew something out. Had the Audioque dialed pretty low but I ran the sub hard for a few hours straight and it finally did her in. Back to the drawing board, need a new sub that'll actually do 1k RMS.

si mag I have mine in a 1.2 cuff box giving it roughly 1000wrms and it loves it sounds great and gets pretty low
Oh oh, ok. I gotcha.

i see no one mentioned the ascendant havoc 1200 watts rms and 4800 max closer to 2000 rms
Might have been cause it was a while ago. Been kinda keeping this thread updated since I set things up. My MRP-m1000 kept going into protect mode so I swapped in an AudioQue 1200D and it's been fantastic... till yesterday when it nuked my sub.

The Havoc looks good but might be too much for the AQ I'm running.

Look for a sub with a 3" coil! 3" coil will handle 1200W thermal power continuous.

Realy if you got 3 years of good use out of the RE, that's pretty solid. Not sure if the new generation is quite as nice (rumors of quality dropping a bit).

If you can get your hands on a TC built sub (new or used) you will be very happy.

I also hear good things about the SI Mag (lot of guys run them in small sealed boxes with good results). I believe the higher end Dayton stuff also performs well in small sealed. If you like the JL products the W7 is a really nice sub that'll handle 1000W pretty well. Downside is the price, but you can get them used for a fair price if you're patient.

JBL GTi sub is a very highly regarded SQ sub and would be worthy of consideration as well. They'll handle gobs of power and sound really great.
