Sealed or ported?

I'm building a box for my 2 12" R Types and I originally got a ported box designed but it leaves me with 7 inches of trunk space. How big of difference will a sealed box sound and what cu ft and hz would i want from a sealed box? 4 cu ft was too big and i had it tuned at 32 hz. Running a Brutus 1500D to them. Anyone know what size of box and tuning I would want to run in a sealed box and will the difference in sound be a lot?

You don't really tune a sealed box. You'll

lose output, but about 1.1 cu ft gross each

will be fine.

It depends on what you are looking for out of these subs. If you've heard them in a ported box, and want that out of your speakers, you won't be happy with a sealed box. A sealed box won't be as lound, but will sound a lot better all around.

I personally always run sealed enclosures, but that's what I'm into. I don't need the huge SPLs.

I've never heard these subs in any box. I've run 2 12" R Types on a 800 watt Audiobahn amp in a sealed box and it wasn't loud enough. I sold that for a 12" X Type which i ran off the same Audiobahn amp and eventually the 1500D Brutus I have now, however i only had it running at 2 ohms and it was a sealed box. Wasn't enough bass so I sold it for an 12" Brahma, which i ran off this Brutus at 2 ohms in a sealed box and it wasn't enough bass. I was underpowering the X and the Brahma significantly. If i power these correctly will they still bassy and make my car shake real nice or will it be weak?

Here's my other set of R's. Not sure how big the box was, but it was sealed and it was not loud enough for my liking. They were underpowered also

Based on what you're saying, you would be way happier with a ported box tuned to a low frequency. It will still sound alright, but it will get way louder.

yeah, you want a ported box. stick with 30-34 hz, depending on your car those tuning frequencies are used for daily setups.

tuning 34-and above is for spl setups. (which is what you dont want for daily driving)

type r's perform much better ported. they do ok sealed, but they aren't the best sealed sub by any means. i actually like my single type R ported better than when i had 2 sealed. 2.25 per sub tuned to 35 hz pounds really nice. putting a little more power to them made a difference as well. 1500 rms on 2 worked well.

I've heard a lot of guy tune down to 28hz. I think that's what I'll try if I ever re-do my girlfriend's car. Should be louder, but still sound very clean.

i put my RE mx in a box tuned to 26hz, and it sounded very nice. i tried tuning to 28 at first for my type R and found that a little bit higher tuning yielded better results. i'd stick to the 32-36 range with type R's.

edit: a lower tuning won't make a type R louder

I'm sorry, I didn't word that right. Right now I have her Infinity Kappa in a 1cu sealed box. If I were to change it to a box ported to 28hz, it would be louder than her current setup, but still sound great.
