Sealed or ported box for JL 12 inch W3's?

So you really have no limit when it comes to enclosures then.
If your looking to shave down to 1 sub, you can look at Obsidian, Sundown, DC, DD, Audioque, Skar, FI, and a few others.

What is your overall budget that you need to work inside? This will help narrow down sub/amp setups that are possible.
Here was my plan. I wanted to do the big 3 and get a battery that I found for 180. The big 3 will run my about 60 bucks everything factored in. I also was going to run 0 gauge to a dist block then split into 2 4 gauges to power my new amp and my current amp (which powers my speakers). All of that right there is about 300. I didn't want to spend more than around 6 or 700, so that leaves me with like a 250 dollar sub, a 250 dollar amp, and I have no idea how much you charge for boxes. That's what I need to get a quote on lol.

"idian, Sundown, DC, DD, Audioque, Skar, FI" All I really know about car audio is the stuff that they sell in my local store and what they sell on sonicelectronix. I don't know a thing about any of these brands, are they like small shops or something? Which one would be really good for 1 12 inch at around 500 rms?

Thanks both of yall for all the input! Do you think If I wanted a good mix of SPL and SQ (leaning slightly towards SQ) 33 hz would do it, or should I go lower?
Also, what does tuning exactly mean? For example, if a box is tuned to 40 hz, does it mean that is the frequency that it will play the best or what? Because I've heard generally that higher tunes (40's) result in more volume at the expense of SQ, while lower tunes (20's) are the other way around. How does the numbers relate in a real world way? Thanks!
If this isn't answered by someone else in 6hrs, I'll answer it for you. I'm about to go hang out with some friends so I dont have time to type up the answer now.

Ok so no one answered this yet so here goes.

I'm no expert by any means but this is how I understand it:

Port tuning is a function of the cross sectional area of the opening (whether round or slot or other shapes) and the length of the port, in relation to the box volume. Assuming volume and cross sectional area are kept constant, the longer the port, the lower the tuning and vice versa. When volume is kept the same and cross sectional area is increased (bigger opening), port length will need to be increased to keep the same tuning. When cross sectional area is kept constant and volume increases, the length of the port will decrease to keep the same tuning. The higher the tune, the more narrow bandwidth of frequencies the enclosure will play and the less musical the box will be. However output will be greater. With a lower tuned box, there will be a greater bandwidth and greater ability to play music. It basically comes down to how much low end you want to sacrifice to gain output or vice versa. 33hz is a good tune for daily driving. It has a good mix between sq and spl. Most people tune between 30 and 38hz for daily driving, depending on their listening tastes. I suggest listening to some ported setups if you can and that will help you determine what tune to use for your setup.

I second Primc3mos suggestion of Boston Acoustics. They make excellent sq oriented subs. All of their subs are under rated and will handle upwards of 2-3x the power they are rated for.
