"Impact" bass instead of "Loud"

took me a while to figure out what you were really talking about. i think i have an idea of what you mean, now......... what you describe has to do more with the vehicle, then the enclosure, or driver. it is how the sound wave is developed in the cabbin. if you have ever sat in the middle, rear, and front of a larger vehicle, you can see how it works. where you place, and fire the sub will set where the wave developes and converges on the other side (front) of the vehicle. i bet if you stuck your head between your knees in your friends car, the audible sound would rise to match what you feel. normally, when you cannot really hear it as well as you feel it, that is something that needs to be fixed. for example, this is why subs are fired to the rear of the trunk, it gives more distance for the sound to develop. facing them foreward, generally reduces sound levels. i had this one friend back in the day show me his system, which was some real nice equipment, but you could barely hear it in the front seats, while everything was shaking (i later pulled a 146.6 out of the same exact subs/enclosure) with roughly the same size amp........

I think alot of you are off track for what he wants.. I've never heard of impactful bass describing a low end heavy setup. Low end heavy setups cause alot of pressure on the ears, move alot of air and sound "loud" without sounding noisy if that makes sense lol. However, usually impact is like tight punchy bass, you know what noobs say you can only get out of 8's. The fact that he said a w7 setup did this strengthens my viewpoint. w7's arne't low end monsters in JL's specced boxes. JL makes their boxes quite a bit smaller than a normal .707 q when sealed, usually closer to .9-1.1. This leads to a little hump around 60-80hz and a sharper low end roll-off. Most importantly to JL it increases mechanical powerhandling a great deal and cuts down on warrantee claims. The OP needs to look for a mid q woofer .5-.7 and put it in a "small sealed box". If he gets the overall q up to about .9 he'll be pleased.... A lowend monster can be fun but I doubt it'll sound anythign like that w7. The DCON is a good woofer but it's a pretty low q. The SA-10 would be easier to get some "impact" out of..

Maybe I'm off topic a bit, but W7's don't hit that hard IMO. They hit ok, but a DD sub will have more impact. Most paper cone subs will hit harder. I've never heard a poly, titanium, or aluminum cone sub have more impact than a paper cone.

Cone material does play a role in the driver's design well beyond the aesthetics many people only see them as, but cone material certainly does not have the significance to over all performance that you suggest it does. Its much like saying "all yellow cars are the fastest, every yellow car Ive ever seen race, won." It suggests you haven't seen very many races yet.

I'm just trying to help the OP. I sick of people trying to make a W7 perform like a SPL machine. I've seen too many races, street beat and db drag. We will see at Heat Wave how hard JL hits. All the paper cones and maybe some carbon fiber will have the highest numbers overall. If there is a better material for high impact, please tell me what it is since you know more than me? Why does FI, RE, DD, Sundown, IA and DC use this material?

Hey, i have a question. Here are a few options i was looking at for a box that im building. Keep in mind that i DONT have an amp so amp i get will be based on the sub i choose.

Iv owned a type R till i let a friend use it and his truck on stolen for a week. but it was more of a "loud" bass so im kinda iffy on it

Alpine type R 50$ CL add

Polk Audio 400-600RMS@ 3 ohm SVC 80$ CL add

SSA Dcon 10" 115$ Website
