Questions about speaker impedence on an Onkyo Receiver...

Hello,

I recently bought an Onkyo TX-SR505 7.1 Reciever. I would like to use this reciever to power 14-16 8-Ohm speakers (Depending on whats the best Ohm load). This reciever and setup is only going to be used to allow music to be played throughout my house. Im curious as to what the best way to wire these speakers would be, and if it would be possible to allow them to be selected 4 at a time, as well as all being able to be run.

Ive been pretty good at working out car audio, but those are DVC and fewer speakers....

Im also not sure what Ohm load the reciever is stable to.... Im guessing 6-ohms? On the spec sheet it says

Dynamic Power 180 W (3 ohms, 1 ch)

160 W (4 ohms, 1 ch)

100 W (8 ohms, 1 ch)

So im not sure if its stable down to 3-4ohms?

Any help would be awesome!

i've got 4 Onkyo receivers and would never run any home theatre receiver at less than 6 ohms unless it specifically states that it is stable at 4 ohms.

Several of the onkyo recievers are designed to handle 4 ohm speakers. That's one of the reasons I like them. Most home recievers are only 8 or maybe 6 ohm. Double check that is the specs for all the speaker outputs, not just the main L and R.

I think the best way would be to wire each set of 4 speakers as an 8 ohm load, because there will be additional impedence rise due to the length of wire. 8 ohm + 8 ohm (parallel) = 4 ohm. 2 pairs of 4 ohm sets wired in series, 4 ohm + 4 Ohm (series) = 8 ohms. You can use terminal/barrier strips from RS to keep the wiring neat, or just ghetto twist the wires as needed.

Wire each of the 4 sets of 4 speakers onto the L,R (front), L,R (rear). That would still leave you with an easy 8 ohm load and several other speaker channels for outdoor speakers, subs or whatever. With that many speakers and lots of wire, you will have large impedence swings and still leave the onkyo lots of room to handle it.

Or wire 2 speakers in series (16 ohm), then wire 2 sets of 2 in parallel, 16 ohm + 16 ohm (parallel) = 8 ohm sets of 4 speakers. That might be easier to install the wiring, but the result is the same.

You could just wire 2 speakers on to each of the 7 channels for 14 speakers @ a 4 ohm load per channel. It would give you more wattage output, but that's a going to be a beastly load on the amplifier when you crank it up and impedence starts swinging. It would probably shorten the life of the amp significantly.

for one, Onkyo will not handle 4 ohm (yes im a onkyo dealer 5 yrs. now). you willl smoke that baby.

make life easy by putting in impedence matching volume controls. Then you wont have to worry, or you can install a switcher like a DLA by aton or something, then again you would have no worries.

if anything the one he bought would match up to the SR-507 which is NOT certified 4ohm capable

You sell HT for a living? Then your a salesman. A salesman who doesn't understand the product your selling. First you say Onkyo can't handle 4 Ohm, even though many of them can. Then you stupidly tell him that a switcher will take care of his impedence issues, which it won't.
