As to that then...I do anything i can get away with, but it is based on morals after all. Its not so bad to want to be liked and if everyone ran around being assholes all day then the world would be a pretty crappy place to live. At the end of the day people just want to be happy

I don't think that he was necessarily suggesting that there are no answers to his questions, only that he wanted to hear what they were.

I also think that most would agree in theory with the general concept that a world where people "do right" is preferable to a world where the strongest do whatever they like so long as it serves their needs. However, it seems to me that morality requies something more than doing things because they are in your self interest. It is not all about fear of punishment.

For example, when you find property that does not belong to you, and no one knows about it, then what compels a person to return the property to its owner?

Or what drives a person do a kind act anamolously?

Again, the answers do not have to be based on religion. I think he just wants to know what your thoughts are.

Question for the Christians - I've always wondered this

OK, so if you're not a Christian you're going to Hell right? So are you saying that everyone in the world right now that strongly believes in Buddah, Allah, whatever, no matter how they live is still going to go Hell? What about the millions, if not billions of people that died prior to 2000 years ago (or however old Christianity is)? Even though they were never even aware of Christianity, do they also get the "Go Straight To Hell, Do Not Pass Go, Do Not Collect $200" card?

I don't think I've ever had anyone that could explain that concept to me.

I think his point was that if you don't believe, then why not do whatever you can get away with? And I think you guys are answering that question.

You spoke of having to answer for wrongdoing by criminal liability. In my statement, I said why not do "whatever you can get away with" to exclude the possibility that one's actions would be tempered by the fear of jail.

i was thinkin about some stuff last night. i was also gonna include some questions that i had found on the web (yahooed 'tough questions for atheists', but decided to just use my own) plus i woulda just PM'ed ppl who i feel are atheists on here, but that woulda took too long.
1.) wouldn't it benefit you to hoard everything now, i mean right now, since you believe there is no afterlife?

2.) to hoard more, you probably have to do some sheisty things. but why wouldn't you do it, since ultimately, you'd have no one to answer to?

3.) does an atheists have morals?? if so, where do they come from/what are they based on?

4.) if u are an atheist with morals, why? who or what does it benefit?

5.) if an atheists says 'i'ma good person', who are you/they comparing themselves to?

6.) instead of beleiving in God, do atheists believe strictly in brain power/human intelligence only?

7.) would an atheist ever practice yoga or meditation? looking at the background and the the intended purposes of both of these, why would you/they?

9.) do atheists try to discredit religions that are not one of the big 3?to me, i always hear about atheists hating christianity only (so it seems)

1. For what purpose would it serve for me to "hoard everything" The concept of saving is hard for me, but that is a personal issue, I dont see any reason to start piling up stuff, as Im not that attached to material objects in the first place. I just need stereo, skateboard, friends, food, weed and beer to be very content with what I have. Why do members on here have 5-10 cars in their driveway? their religion? they are probably not athiests / some even part of the big 3 religions. If I was unbelievable rich I would live like a ****ing rockstar and indulge in every excess and probbaly die early, but thas rock and roll, not athiesm.

I do beleive in waking up and making somethign of myself, doing somethign productive everyday, ultimately the movie ends and if this is the time we have ther is no other time to do what we want.

 

2. You have to have an income above the poverty level to hoard things, I beleive in Karma, knowing in your heart what is right. I have hundreds of friends in this small town and Im a good freind. You ulimately answer to the people that make up your life and the people you love.

 

3. Morals come from your heart, Ultimately you answer to yourself when you ask yourself "am I a good person? Karma will get you good.. DO good things and good things will happen to you / vice versa.

 

4. Morals benefit all the people I come into contact with, all my freinds, my own concience. Ultimately you live the best life you possibly can in this time alloted, you never know when your gonna die and thats life.

 

5. I am a good person - compared to the most brilliant teachers I had in college, compared to anyone I look up to. If you dont hold youself to a higher standard, and want to better yourself, life pretty much stops and you digress.

 

6. Karma, and human interaction are all that are really going on to me.. Anything else is an interpetation of those two. Or a difference of perspective stemming from interaction with others.

 

7. Yoga is great for stretching and excercise, I dont do yoga personally, I do stretch before I skate and do other activities.

Meditation gives your brain a chance to level off, to process the endless stream of information and differences of perspective that can simultaneously exist. It helps with dealing with human interaction, especailly empathy and understanding others.

 

8. I could care less what religion you are, Human interaction and Karma are all I judge people on.

 

9.if humans descendend from apes, why do apes still exist, since humans are more advantageous??--

A part of me thinks that aliens had something to do with our evolutionary jump, lets just say I cannot explain this and science itself is still struggling to answer your question... Why arnt there half-way developed apes running around - where is the missing link - why do we have a concience and are so amazingly aware of ourselves and the peopelaround us?

I dont know I just try to wake up and make the most of every day..

i really think deep down that's why everyone is a good person. if everyone treated you like shit, eventually you'd just start treating people like shit because you'd realize there is no reason to waste your time treating those same people good. unless you thought eventually you could change their minds and actions...

I love how almost everyone avoided #9. I Think the reason why they dislike christianity is that is pressed on to every one. Like the term " Oh thank god" is pressed in to every ones mind at a early age. Also I think its stupid on every war ever fought religion was some which way brought into it. This only my thoughts and im in no way stating im atheist. Also when this country was started it was started for a reason to get away from religious oppression but now every were you look its "in god we trust" this or "God bless america" so on. its even on our money (our for fathers did not put that there congress in 1956 did) And we basicaly say any one who dosn't believe in Said god is going to H ell. yet those same people say this county is free from oppression. Yeah right.

yes and no...

i'm sure, at any given time, there are some people that are just good hearted. but in my opinion, it won't last long if it's no reciprocated(sp?) or there is no hope of it ever being returned.
