Punishment too hard?

Students couldn't do homework prior to the advent of the PC??????? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

now a days, high schools incorporate the computer a lot more, how old are you guys?

kids gotta do online research, type out papers & print, keep in touch with friends. You can also email teachers and such for help. I dont think of a computer as a toy that is a privilege, now a days its almost a necessity

I had homework all the time in highschool that was internet required like we would have to go to a website and print off a worksheet or read specific documents on a website. So in some cases its required, book reports and the like not so much because usually there is a physical copy of something that you need, but then again when ever I had to do actual papers on a topic the guidelines always said 2 physical sources 2 internet sources or similar, internet sources usually came from ebscohost or whatever but still the internet was needed.

I think fatherdukes is over reacting by taking his 17 year olds computer and telling him to quit football

limit his computer time say from 3-6 is homework time and it better be done *call the teachers have them sign a paper saying he wrote down his homework or he actually did it*

then after 6 eat dinner or whatever finish work if need be then from 7-9 let the kid use the computer then sleepy/shower at like 10

im on your page

Uhh I'm an adult,I told him to bring his comp to me so I shouldn't have to remind him every week to bring it to me,he remembered to bring it but since I didn't say anything he tried to get slick. Thanks to everyone who gave advice whether good or bad.I made some costly parenting mistakes but I'm trying to correct some of them but it's never to late for someone to learn be it kid or adult. He's just making it harder for his 11 yr old sister:D.Live and learn I guess
How's his grades? Does he smoke teh reefer or drink?

If he's doing better than straight C's and not engaging

in illegal activities; then you sound a little like you have a stick

up your ...

He's in sports, that probably keeps him out of trouble.

I don't think you need to make some guantlet of rules

that when broken, revoke privledges that also happen

to be a positive influence (ie football).

It just sounds strange; like he needs to be punished

in your mind because it's part of growing up.

exactly. every english class i've had since 9th grade the teacher has specifically stated "when you get home tonight, get on the internet and look up *blah blah*" followed by "if you do not have access to internet you can go up to the library with the NAZI LIBRARIAN for 15 minutes"

****ing nazi librarian. I got into like 3 different fights with that bish. I always won.

Wait are you serious, the kid is 17 and you wont let him get on the computer during the week. Thats harsh. What if he wants to surf ca.com? ive been on the computer just about everyday since i was at least 13 years old =/.
And dont take away a sport, thats doing the opposite of what u want to accomplish.
kid usually makes all d's,so this should be his last year in school and I wanted him to really try to graduate, basically I'm sticking to my guns and that's that so again Thanks for the replies, hell this isn't the end of the fuccin world,he can't play football big deal I guess,it could be worse for him.He lives in a great neighborhood, has nice clothes and a fridge full of food, what else could he need.He will survive.

He said he would kill his parents
You ever heard of a figure of speech? If you honestly think that I would kill them you need to get your head on straight. Obviously I wouldn't kill them, I'd more or less just ***** and moan about it and more than anything make their lives completely miserable. I hope he does the same to you. Taking things he likes away from him isn't necessarily going to make him start telling the truth. You obviously have let it go too far.

So fine don't take my advice. Tell your kid he can't play football. See how well that works out for your household. You honestly want a pissed off 17 year old wandering around your house with nothing to do?

And I'm curious why did you make this thread when everyone who has disagreed with you you have disregarded and contradicted? If you already knew the answer what was the point? If the kid gets D's he shouldn't be allowed to play football anyway. When I went to High School (which wasn't all that long ago) we had to sustain AT LEAST a C average in order to play sports... Then again anything less than 69 was failing at my school. Not to mention there really is no excuse for D's in public high schools. Get him a tutor or make him stay after school for extra help. I'm sure the teachers would be more than happy to help him. It's obvious he doesn't do SHIT.

What more could he need? How about excercise? Competition? A rush? ANYTHING? If you honestly think a 17 year-old is happy with food, clothes, and a location then you need to meet the real world.

Well if a computer is required for course work the father could supervise the homework so the son doesn't fukk off and game. The kids deserves a smack down of some sort.

As long as he lives under the parent's roof, he abides by their rules....PERIOD!

Otherwise, kick his *** out and let him see how the real world works. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I think I see the problem. Are the people posting kids or parents cause if you are a kid then I understand why you are against what I'm doing.I should have used a poll.
I am a parent and I can't believe you would actually ask Cheesemind WTF to do. He doesn't know anything about anything and yet thinks he knows everything. He is a person to use for target practice, not for advice on raising your kid.

The thread could have and should have ended with Speedbump3's advice. Punish him -- but do not take away football (at least not for this reason).

Kids get into all kinds of trouble when they are bored and have low self esteem. Football helps prevent both of those problems.

IMO the answer is pretty easy. His defiance over the computer is what lead to these problems in the first place, take that away from him and don't let him fool you by saying he has a project only to spend hours on myspace.

Yeah I have pretty much been a softy and that's why he said fucc it i will go if I want to,some of you all don't know this kid,Only makes c's and d's and haven't even passed the exit exam(only has 2 trys left)to graduate,he is larger than I so although i could whoop his *** in a fight he is too big to whoop. The reason he is the way he is is because I wasn't hard enough but now since he is almost an adult he needs to learn to do what the fucc you are told.
If this is the case you might want to SERIOUSLY considering other options as far as his high school completion. With grades like that he is going to find it very difficult to get into any competitive or even decent university. Has he completed his SATs?

I was in a similar situation in highschool many years ago. I basically just fu(ked around and my grades were worthless. My father was a university dean and my mother a professor. They realized my situation and deeply encouraged me to withdraw (drop out) of highschool, which I did.

What this enabled me to do was to take the GED and receive a relatively high score around 93%. Mind you this is not a test designed for MENSA members //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif. Because of the high GED score i was able to be admitted to university without my high school grades, class standing or SAT being a consideration.

I received my undergratuate degree, two masters degrees, my wife also has 2 advanced degrees whom i met as a colleauge during my studies and we have a very nice life together. Had i gone the traditional way and finished high school with such suffering marks, more than likely i would have never gotten into any decent university (if any at all) and my life would most likely be very much different now.

Good luck.

He's in sports, that probably keeps him out of trouble.
Sorry, but that is an excessively false statement. Football kids were some of the absolute (dumbest) and worst acting kids i've EVER met. They all seem to think that the coach is their buddy so they are always trying to get coaches to get them out of classes, and every time they get in trouble the coach just goes and gets them out of it so they can keep playing. Total bullshit, but whatever.

Btw he was NOT doing no fuccin homework,he just knew I forgot
well i think as the parent of a kid thats doing bad in highschool you shoudl have some kind of contact with the teachers. Like weekly meetings , emails, phone calls.

Something because the kids slacking but really givethe kid his footballs back
