Pioneer Looking for better head unit source - ipod type connection

Hi

First post here so bear with me

I have a VW Tiguan with Pioneer AVIC X 950 BH head unit (nav/dvd/etc) / JL Audio amps and speakers/sub

I m utililizing an Ipod that allows a touch screen user interface

I would like to upgrade from the ipod and also question if the Pioneer is the idea head unit

I had a Nakamichi Cassette head unit in the 80s which sounded so much clearer than what I have today

1) what is a great head unit with full function aspects that would work with touch interface

2) are there new digital players that will sound much better than the ipod and retain some touch screen interface options
