Boston Acoustics GT-22 or KAC-9105D to power my sundown 8"

I have a sundown audio SA-8 V2 in a box built to the specs on their website. I have the sub hooked up to an old Boston Acoustics GT-22 at 2 ohms so the sub is getting about 500 watts. The sub sounds really impressive for an 8" but I'm wondering if my 900 watt RMS Kenwood amp would be a better match. I have heard of people throwing a lot more power at these subs but I'm not sure what kind of box they were using exactly. Is it safe to give the sub 900 watts RMS from the kenwood amp with the gain and LPF set properly or should I keep it on the current amp? Any input is appreciated.

I was listening to the sub pretty loud on the highway last night and decided to check the amp when I got home. It was so hot I couldn't leave my hand on it for even a second, the kenwood is definitely going in when I get the chance.
