Am I correct in understanding that people love this headunit because they can run an active setup, that it's a highly customizable unit?

Every review, and people here, rave about it. Would I still see a benefit if I get it and run it passive? I have no clue figuring out how to run an active setup. That being the case, would I better off with say the 8700 series? Or an alpine 148 or 149.

I mainly want it to have Bluetooth and Android compatibility. It would be ideal to stay around $150 for it, trying to keep a total budget around $400 for this part of my build. Which includes the components, rear deck speakers, amp and headunit. If you guys think I would benefit from the 80prs with the way I would use I would spring for it.

You can get them for around $250 if you watch the prices on amazon, if you don't know what an active setup is then you likely don't need this headunit and may in fact be bothered by the extreme learning curve in operating it.

IMO buy a regular headunit with 6ch out F/R/Sub with bluetooth capability and you'll be happy.

I recently purchased the 80PRS and absolutely love it. I wouldn't say PRS is a bad buy if you decide not to run active. The unit, when I had it in passive, improved the clarity of my music noticeably. Although it should be said my older unit was a rubbish Sony HU : ).

To switch to active(network mode) there is a switch below the HU that you flick on. If you meant you don't know how to wire and set up an active system then you could always use an experienced installer. It's what I did and am fairly satisfied with the results.

I quote @Jeffdachef when I say.... It makes bad speakers sound decent, decent speakers sound good and good speakers sound phenomenal.
Something along those lines ; )....

Any suggestions then?

Anything with ~2-4v pre out voltages and good reviews, i havent looked around in a while so my opinion on a specific headunit would be pretty useless.

I have no reservations about the 80prs being a great headunit, I'm merely saying that OP could get something better suited for his needs that will not only be cheaper, but also retain nearly the same SQ.

Cheaper yes. Nearly the same SQ, unlikely. Decent enough SQ, yes.

Try one and you'll know why everyone has a hard on for the 80 prs.

There are many reasons to get this headunit. Not just for active use...
Dual 16 band eq

Auto eq

Auto time alignment

Dual USB.

Dual aux

Great sq headunit.
dont forget the

built in front and rear attenuation aka seperate front/rear precision gain control

28-Bit Binary Floating-Point DSP

clean signal output up to max volume

ultra clear bluetooth and extremely long bluetooth range
