Piecing a Component Set Together

I'm piecing a set together as well, but to run active. And the opposite of you, I already have ordered some Crescendo mids, and am trying to find a tweet to pair with them. Not sure how to match a tweeter with my mids though.
I am not meaning to be sarcastic here, but what makes them special? I ask because I have not found much info on them.

If you're asking me, I'm not sure...
I did a little research on it a while back and most ppl seemed to say it didn't make much difference excluding looks. I think it depends on the driver itself as to whether it can benefit from a phase plug or not. But the concept of how a phase plug works seems almost undeniably effective.....and at that point, I just gave up trying to figure it out lol

If I had the resources, I'd love to experiment with it though.
me too, personally, I think it looks like crap..but the concept is definately worthwhile..there again, It ***** that everything we deal with is round, but the design is effective...lol

Ok, So I am in need of a front stage and I am trying to keep my options open... I am thinking of piecing a set together on Madisound or Partsexpress. I am curious as to what speakers you guys have had success with... I deff think I will go with Vifa tweets, not sure on woofers, I need 6.5". Also, I am going to be running them passive, so how do I know which ohm load of speakers to get? For instance, do I get an 8 ohm woofer and a 4 ohm tweeter, or how exactly would they match up? I would be using the Xover to get a final 4 ohm load. My budget is about $200 for everything, but of course the lower the better.

Thanks for any help ahead of time. Im also down to just get a nice component set, but figured this way I would maybe save some money. I would take a HAT Imagine set, but of course the price just went up on them //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif
Watch the reviews. Vifa tweeters I've auditioned are great on-axis but not so hot off axis. Also worthy of consideration is some of the 4X7" ribbon midrange/tweeter drivers mated to a solid midbass crossed 1000hz or so.

Currently I use Mpye and Exodus mids and old style Boston pro tweeter (one of my all time favorites) but have had good luck with the big B&G planar mids and dedicated midbass.

IMO doing this on passive crossover is a recipe for fail unles you're incredibly lucky. Going active will give you the ability to make most good components balance out and blend in right with eachother.

does the Phase plug that is common in many mids actually help response?
I havent tested enough with midange to tell, but I can say it HURTS midbass output all things being equal very similar woofer without plays it's lowest range with much more authority than those with phase plug (that could be purely a function of cone area and mms though...but it is my experience).

Yea I hear you. I really have no way of going active at the moment. Later down the road when I pick up an 80PRS I will be able to tho. May just have to look for some cheaper component sets.

Very true. What are some of the better active crossovers available these days?

Easier these days to just get an active deck or even an active amp.
This ^^^

this is what I use right now, actually a combination of the two...I remember when Audio Control was the go-to for EQ and x-over needs. I was just curious if
folks still look to external crossovers and who's who in brands available.
Audiocontrol is probably still the best source for that sort of thing at the moment, but really IMO any deck worth calling "SQ" oriented would be active capable as would any good multichannel amp.

Certainly, plenty of active externals still made, and plenty of older ones to be had for cheap. I see an older model Clarion pop up pretty often. They are praised for doing everything so well, and still typically costing around $80 or less. If I was to go with one, it'd be that. All the new fancy/expensive processors can get the job done too of course.

They were under my budget, fit my mounting depth and power handling requirements, and recieved generally positive reviews. What more do I need? I'm not gonna lie and call myself an SQ guy, but I like my music clean and clear, especially at high volumes. Everyone said they held up well, and that's good enough for me. They do have a phase plug though, didn't know that was such a big deal until I read this thread haha.

Been contemplating this same issue. Plan on using my rainbow cal 25s and getting different woofers. Want to go ative but my cd5000 is not capable. What model clarion are you referencing? Will any active crossover work? Quite a few pop up on amazon.

Would like one of those pioneer 80prs but would rather upgrade alternator before head unit so it's out of budget for now
