Piecing a Component Set Together

Ok, So I am in need of a front stage and I am trying to keep my options open...

I am thinking of piecing a set together on Madisound or Partsexpress. I am curious as to what speakers you guys have had success with... I deff think I will go with Vifa tweets, not sure on woofers, I need 6.5". Also, I am going to be running them passive, so how do I know which ohm load of speakers to get? For instance, do I get an 8 ohm woofer and a 4 ohm tweeter, or how exactly would they match up? I would be using the Xover to get a final 4 ohm load. My budget is about $200 for everything, but of course the lower the better.

Thanks for any help ahead of time. Im also down to just get a nice component set, but figured this way I would maybe save some money. I would take a HAT Imagine set, but of course the price just went up on them //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

What crossovers are u using? That will determine the ohm load of the drivers u choose...

I'm piecing a set together as well, but to run active. And the opposite of you, I already have ordered some Crescendo mids, and am trying to find a tweet to pair with them. Not sure how to match a tweeter with my mids though.
find out how high those Crescendo mids will play. Usually 3.15khz is a good starting point.

A rule of thumb I went by for determining how low a tweeter could play was doubling the FS (resonant freq) of the tweet and that's how low it could be crossed on a 12db slope. If you're using a steeper slope u can cross a little lower depending on the tweet.

So, if I were u, as a starting point, if those mids are atleast good to 3khz, I'd be looking for a tweet that has an FS of 1.5khz or lower.

Awesome, that's a big help! And just for reference, what would be considered "low" for a tweet? 2k? 3k? What problems or benefits do you get from having a tweet play lower?

2k is pushing it on your avg tweet.

As far as low playing tweets, it depends on your car, and your gear. Choosing a lower xover point sometimes helps because you're not allowing beaming of the mids to screw up your frequency response. The problem is obviously strain on the tweeter though and, in my case, vocals that didn't sound natural due to the driver/phase shift in the middle of the vocal range.

It's one of those things u have to play around with and see what sounds best to u. Me and @DCtC had the same car, but diff gear and diff ears. He ended up getting better results with the lower xover point (like 2.5 or 2.8khz iirc) while I kept my drivers crossed no lower than 4 or 5khz and even experimented with 6.3khz since my mids did very well in the midrange and it offered a more smooth sound when crossed there IMO.

I always recommend 3khz as a starting point though as most mids and tweets I've seen are atleast good to that point.

does the Phase plug that is common in many mids actually help response?
If you're asking me, I'm not sure...

I did a little research on it a while back and most ppl seemed to say it didn't make much difference excluding looks. I think it depends on the driver itself as to whether it can benefit from a phase plug or not. But the concept of how a phase plug works seems almost undeniably effective.....and at that point, I just gave up trying to figure it out lol

If I had the resources, I'd love to experiment with it though.

8 ohm will require more voltage than 4ohm (I understand this), but if that were the case, does that mean the power will flow to the path of least resistance (4ohm driver), thus possibly attenuating the 8 ohm driver to a certain degree? I suppose this would be desirable to help with the "Beaming" effect common to larger drivers at higher frequencies .

I think having the ability to bandpass helped me out. Did you have them in the sail panel or stock location? The first set I had in the stock spot where fine CO higher, but when I went to the sail it had to drop.
