Passive Radiator Question

Hey guys, I've got a couple questions about Passive Radiators

I'm going to be installinga 12" TC9 in a single cab s10. Needless to say, there isn't much room for a big ported enclosure, and it would take some creative building to get the volume I'd need going that method.

That's why I'm looking into the Passive Radiator possibility. The TC Sounds ones look really nice. I'd like to know tha basic Pros and Cons, but here are a few specific questions:

-Will one 12" PR be adequate for my 12" TC9?

-Is it possible to recone a PR (I'd like to make it match my TC9, which is a custom unit)

-Are there any other PRs I should consider?

Any experience you guys can give on this issue will be much appreciated

Thanks,

Aaron

All these questions see like they would be right up the alley of the tech guys at TC Sounds...
E-mailed them and haven't heard anything in over a week. Don't want to go through the approval process to post on their forum either.

With PRs you usually want twice the volumetric displacement of the sub being used. With a TC9 you would want a matching pair of 12 PRs with similar excursion to the TC9. Or often, stepping up a size in PR will have a similar effect.... going to a 15" PR and a 12" sub combo is very common.

With a single 12" PR and sub, often the PR will run out of excursion before you hit the limits of the sub. Thats an issue //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Thanks...

Aaron, we have a lot of threads over on the TC Board about this but here is your answer: Passives are great for small ported boxes for the reasons you pointed out. The direct conversion to a port is rather complex, but a single 12" high excursion passive, can produce a ton of displacement. Off the top of my head, it could be as much as one or even two 4" ports. For higher tuned systems where excursion is not as demanding (compared to low tuned system) one passive is more than adequate. For lower tuned systems, we generally throw on two passives per active, but that is more inline with home theater. But the other issue with only using one PR is "mass balance." Unless your subwoofer is bolted to your car, I would suggesting using two opposing passives to reduce vibration and energy loss.

The forums are on admin validation because of bots, once we get a better bot filter we can take that off, sorry. Some emails also don't get through to our server, so I would suggest calling during the week. In the mean time, I lurk around here to catch the questions which don't make it our way.

I'm planning to tune the TC9 to 30-35 Hz, and can probably get up to ~2 cubes before displacement. Do you think one PR would be adequate??

Also, is it possible to get the PR with a different cone so that it can match my sub??
