Lol, how do companys come up with some of their power ratings, Like certain computer multimedia systems, 850 watts P.M.P.O. peak mechanical power output or peak musical power or whatever and its only like a 3 inch sub, or say certain car audio brands like sony, is that like with a wall socket plugged to the rcas, the output every transistor can handle for a millisecond before the components mechanically explodes? Im just curious what formulas they make up to make the ratings legal

The true peak power would result of (peak value of the voltage of the power supply rail)^2 divided by the impedance of the load.

The result would depend on the measurement time frame, the shorter will measure more power due to the minor voltage drop.

It is a complete waste of time to try to place any value on max ratings. They're legal simply because they're max which isn't a legally defined value. If you were to take the time and spend the money to challenge a company on it they'd just say...

Well, in a temp chamber near absolute zero, with 24v input this amp can produce its printed max power for 12 picoseconds.

The worst one I've seen is the Legacy LA1099. Its "max power" is 4400w. Rms power is 85x4 at 2 ohms, or 340w. It has a 30A fuse.

The only thing car amp mfg's have to adhere to is the cea-2006 standard, and even that is an optional certification.

they can basically just pull the numbers out of their arse. Home audio is strictly regulated by the FTC for products sold here, car audio is not ... so there is NO true standard that they are held to. Every time someone proposes a standard (to be self-regulated), you just get into a pissing match - all of the high end companies have things they think are important and should be measured in a certain way, all of the low end companies want as much wiggle room as possible so they actually look as comaparable as possible to the better quality stuff.
