I need some major help from you all. I have this strange 'pop' sound coming from my subs when the volume is at a moderate-loud level. I noticed it a little when I had my old box in and I thought I heard it coming from the box and not the subs so I just kept the volume low enough to make it stop (or at least not heard from the driver's seat) until I got my new box built. However, I now have the new box in and am hearing this noise still. Of course it's more noticeable when it's turned up louder and it doesn't happen on low notes or kick drums or anything specific. It's almost like it pops inbetween some bass hits, but not all of them. I opened the trunk so I could listen close to what was happening and here's what I've tried:

-I checked the amp's output with my DMM and it was not maxing out on power. One of the two songs I tested it repeatedly on is a rock song with some thumping bass drum and bass guitar and at 50 out of 65 volume, it registered ~20 Volts on the loudest hits. (1200W @ 1ohm = 34.6 Volts) Even though it wasn't maxing, I was getting the pop which doesn't happen on the notes but more just inbetween them and not on every one. The subs aren't bottoming out as the pop doesn't happen when they are moving a lot on good notes. I thought maybe the head unit was clipping the signal so I backed it off to 34 out of 65 and had to turn the gain all the way up (200mV) to get 20 Volts out to the speakers and still pop the same.(Head unit has 6.5V rca outs)

-I thought maybe the frequency was too high so I turned down the cutoff gradually which did seem to lessen it a little but it was still making the pop with it down to 70Hz (normally @ ~125). I don't plan on limiting the subs to 30-70Hz and wasnt' going to turn it down anymore, that's for sure.

-I thought maybe it's because I'm using an MP3 disc. So I tried a rap song on the MP3 disc = pop. Put in the original disc (no scratches, hardly used) = pop just the same. This song did put out the power on bass hits though with slight clipping peaking at 37 Volts occasionally.

I'm lost as to what the problem is. The pop sound sounds like an electrical pop or like a freak surge, it reminds me of the vids where people pop a speaker with the wall outlet voltage. That's what I think of when I hear it.

I don't know if it's the Type-R's screwing up or if it's the Concept Audio amp. I wouldn't think a lack of voltage would make any difference as I'm running on my stock alternator (105amp) and the pop sound happens at idle or while driving. I don't have other subs or amps to test out and I don't have much money left to buy more of anything. If it's the amp, which I bought new from diatribe, I could get an Orion 1200d if I had to, but only if I were certain that was the problem.

HELP PLEASE!!! I need my bass and I need it clean. Everything is about perfect aside from this pop and I'm at my wit's end. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crying.gif.ec0ebefe590df0251476573bc49e46d8.gif

Find someone with a different sub and try their sub in your setup. If the pop still exists, it electrical / clipping / bad amp. If it doesn't, your Type R is somewhere between dead and dying.

xover setting?
That's what I meant by this:

I turned it down but it was still there and I'm not gonna run subs @ 50Hz and below only. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

i was getting the same thing for a while

check the seal on your box

actually i have a phase control...i know this has nothing to do with it, but i just tweaked it a little bit and it fixed it. Also check to make sure it's not the cd...try a few of them

i had the same thing my box was ported to 40hz (i know very high) and when i played certain songs it would pop...i beliive all it was, was that it was reaching x-max and hitting the bottom of the basket...at least thats what it sounded like

but i'll stfu now..i'm still a newb //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

My problem with this is:

A: I have two subs.

B: I don't really know anyone else with car audio setups.... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/uhoh.gif.c07307dd22ee7e63e22fc8e9c614d1fd.gif

Like mark said. Take the sub out of the box, and play it free air on a very low volume, and see if you can still hear that sound.

Possible air leak.
Pull the sub out of the box and play it free air with low power and see if you can isolate the sound, provided it's a mechanical noise. If not then it's box or input.
This is a very good idea. Hmm... I'll have to try this....
