Old School<New School

I have my SS ref 604, its not super old, but I'd say old enough to consider it old school in car audio. I havn't been able to come close to finding any new amp even remotely near the price I paid for it with similar specs (1ohm mono stable and .5ohm stereo stable).

The only PPI amp made that did less than 4 ohms was the PC1400 which pushed a rated load of 800 watts at 2 ohms.(still way underrated)

single-ended amplifier technology was developed in the 30's...it was superseded by push-pull and ultralinear designs in the '40s.

The old PPI stuff is really great stuff and the Older PRO MOS stuff could go lower then 4ohms also. I know what amp you are talking about I think. Did it look like the old M series amp and was about the size of an A1200? In my opinion, old school amps are the best, but like many have said, there is a such thing as old school crap!!! What art series amp are you getting again?

I think another part of the problem with reccomending an old school amp is the inherent upkeep that comes with having one. 10 years are a long time for electrical comonents to turn on, heat up, turn off, turn on, heat up, turn off,turn on, heat up, turn off, etc etc.... So chances are a repair will be warranted sooner or later (good luck finding amp repair services if you don't know where to start looking). And like a previous poster said, theres still some good stuff these days, and with warranties to boot!

That having said, I have one ppi 2150 now (old black ones not the .2's) and once I get another one, my xtants may very well be gettin sold on ebay!
