Old School<New School

I have my SS ref 604, its not super old, but I'd say old enough to consider it old school in car audio. I havn't been able to come close to finding any new amp even remotely near the price I paid for it with similar specs (1ohm mono stable and .5ohm stereo stable).

The only PPI amp made that did less than 4 ohms was the PC1400 which pushed a rated load of 800 watts at 2 ohms.(still way underrated)

i didnt know i could bridge at 2! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif

i got it for $150 - what do you think its worth??!

single-ended amplifier technology was developed in the 30's...it was superseded by push-pull and ultralinear designs in the '40s.

Solid state stuff isn't the same as it was back when it was first introduced, either...buffers and oscillators have come a long way //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Hold on there chief. That one is a later model. The original PC1400 (mono amp) is bridgeable to 2 ohms, not the one you have. Sorry. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

The old PPI stuff is really great stuff and the Older PRO MOS stuff could go lower then 4ohms also. I know what amp you are talking about I think. Did it look like the old M series amp and was about the size of an A1200? In my opinion, old school amps are the best, but like many have said, there is a such thing as old school crap!!! What art series amp are you getting again?

Well its still a PC model so its pushin way more than 200 watts. My PC2150 is rated at 600 ,but its pushing over a 1000 watts. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

EDIT: The old model PC1400 did 400 @ 4 ohms, and 800 @ 2 ohms.(rated //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/up2something.gif.dd110ecf3ae4b76050d87598f2f8de7c.gif )

I think another part of the problem with reccomending an old school amp is the inherent upkeep that comes with having one. 10 years are a long time for electrical comonents to turn on, heat up, turn off, turn on, heat up, turn off, turn on, heat up, turn off, etc etc.... So chances are a repair will be warranted sooner or later (good luck finding amp repair services if you don't know where to start looking). And like a previous poster said, theres still some good stuff these days, and with warranties to boot!

That having said, I have one ppi 2150 now (old black ones not the .2's) and once I get another one, my xtants may very well be gettin sold on ebay!
