Old Guy Rants...lol

I first caught the car audio bug in 1987-88. It didn't take long for the competitive juices to start flowing and I started competing in local sound offs. I started in the 50 watt class using a Punch45 powering 4 tweeters, 6 midbass drivers, and 2 10's. I still have a shoe box full of caps and coils...lol. I eventually wanted more, which I think we all share to some extent, and ended up with the Punch45, 2 Punch75's and 2 Punch150's driving a total of 16 speakers. Back in the early 90's that was alot of power in a daily driver, not to mention the investment! I've been away from car audio for 10 years, and just recently caught the bug again. I wanted to introduce myself because I'll be reading alot of posts and hopefully chatting with you experienced audiophiles. I'll be putting together two systems in the next few months, one for me and one for the wife, and I'd really appreciate all the help I can get. I'm a decent box builder, understand speakers, crossovers, and basic equalization, but the new technology thats available is amazing. Of course I could go find an old school HCCA225 and see how many speakers I can drive...lol, but I've already been down that road. Anyway, I wanted to introduce myself so that you might cut me a little slack for being a dumb f*** once in awhile...lol. Hope to chat with you all soon.

Nice lol

You sound like my dad actually, but he got the caraudio bug in the early 80's And still has it

My first amp was a 1987 Punch 45 too, good amp, until some stupid guy (a dude at a repair shop) shorted it out thinking it had a protection circut when it obviously didnt. It's still in my closet lol too bad its a year older than i am lol

you should talk to people like squeak, and jim j about SQ.. im sure there are a lot of other people on this forum too but i see their names a lot so they come to mind..

there are a few that have changed from back in the day, as youre aware im sure..

but when you start on those projects then update up with new threads and make sure you give your car, budget, and what you want to achieve and we'll all try to help as best we can.

PS: old school amps for teh win

Nice to see another OG around here welcome to the forum. I was also a proud owner of 2 Punch 75's back in the day. I'm actually still running three MTX Thunder 2160'2 from the early 90's, still going strong. Good luck with the new systems and congratulations for getting back into it. Oh and BTW you can't ask a dumb question around here. Take a look at some of the threads you'll see what I'm talkin about.

Welcome to the forum my fellow elder //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif Ask away //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

haha yep- the good ole days:)

first real system was 2 punch 45's- one on 2 punch 15s and one on a punch 5.25 component set.

competed in thunder on wheels, pulled low 130s on the b&k mic with flashdance.

anyone remember the OLD punch PRO subs? those things kicked ***! the first install i did when i actually started WORKING in the industry was 2 of the pro 15s with a power 1000 chrome shroud on them.

anyone remember the "gavotte" eq?

anyway, things are alot less expensive now compared to what they used to be, with the advent of the class d amplifiers.

man, those first punch amps would get so hot, the heatsinks would turn form black to purple....

I ate ramen noodles for two months straight to buy 4 punch pro 18's and 2 power 1000's //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif Put it in my 1974 School bus yellow Volvo station wagon that I got from a dude for painting his garage. Was the first actual SPL system I ever built . Metered it at a local pro audio shop ( only people who had any kind of meter locally ) The goldline meter they had only went up to 130db. With that system could play any music I wanted, and make that meter flash pound signs //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif People looked at me like I was insane //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

you the man!

Now we are talking about the systems that I remember. I can't believe how cheap things are now days (or is it that I actually make money now)//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif Anyone remember the Rockford Audiophile series of speakers? I had a whole system with the stuff and it sounded really good back then other than always popping the tweeters I swear I went thru 10 sets of them.

Black treated cone, flat button looking dust cap. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif The audiophile subs were and still are IMO the best sounding subs rf ever produced. I had a couple pairs of the 10's many moons ago. I miss them dearly //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Nice to see I'm not the only old guy that's hard of hearing...lol. I have noticed some amazing stuff. Amps are packed full of technology and cheap cheap cheap, quality component speakers are still real expensive, and dual voice coil subs are idiot proof..lol. Any manufacturers I need to stay away from? I've always liked using stuff that isn't mainstream. Thanks for the welcome.

As with the new technologys come new standards. One thing popping in to my head is the amount of speakers you used to run.

Wow about sums it up. I find keeping it simple helps the overall sound of the system. At least to me.

Welcome and enjoy your stay.

I was a basshead youngster man //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif Too get loud volume with the subs widely avaliable at the time. You needed a lot of them. A lot of the stuff people are doing these days was impossible back then. Unless you were backed by NASA or something //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
