Odd Speaker Noises

A few days ago i got a 2003 cavalier from my dad. It had a cheap kenwood radio in it that every so often it would go into protect mode and i would have to reset it. I got sick of doing this and wanted to put my older but much nicer alpine unit in the car. I installed the alpine unit and it seemed to work fine in the driveway, but when i started to drive it around something isnt right.

Basically if i'm listening to the radio, cd or aux input out of the blue my speakers sound like they are getting some kind of feedback or distortion, something. They just sound horrible. All i have to do is pull the faceplate off and put it back on and the problem goes away for a bit. But it always comes back.

At first i thought it was because there were no rear speakers and the wires in the back were bare and hanging, after a quick tape job the sound came back.

Whats wrong, are my speakers shorting out somewhere? Im guessing thats why the kenwood went into protect mode so often.

Head unit is a CDA-7893 and car is a 2003 cavalier.
