Noob speaker wiring question.

I've read a ton of tutorials but nothing prepared me for this stupidity.

Anyway, I'm trying to wire some JBL GTO 6x9s in my rear deck. Two problems. First, the terminals aren't labeled plus or minus so I have no idea which goes where. One side seems to go directly to a coil of wire on the outside of the magnet, another goes to uh, a piece of metal. How do I tell which is which?

Second question - the connects are just a little rectangular strip of metal with a small (18g fits through it stripped) hole in it. How am I supposed to connect the speaker wire to this? Just put it through the whole and wrap it around??? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

Thanks for answering these stupidly basic questions.

1) It's doesn't matter, try to be consistent from side to side.... if "coil of wire terminal" is + on the left, make it + on the right of your car.

2) You either solder the wire directly to the terminals or go to RadioShack or a hardware store and buy push-on wire connectors.

Soldering work's the best but if you do not have access to a soldering gun or know's someone just go to your local auto store and get some clips to put the wire into. just like beat the dominator said i soldered mine works well.

To find the positive/neg terminals, take a D battery & touch pos/neg ends to the speaker terminals on a set of speakers that have pos/neg marked - you may have to tape wires to each side of the battery to do this & make sure pos ono the battery goes to pos on the speaker. The cone will either push forward or retract while connected. Note which way it goes.

Now go to one of your unmarked speakers & do the same thing. Reverse the battery to reverse the cone movement until you get the same response you did with the other speaker. Pos on the battery = pos on the speaker so long as the cone movements match the other speaker.

One second there guys, if you make your rear speakers according to this and not match ones in the front they would be out of phase right??? If this happens then the whole thing would be out of whack.

It'd be pretty obvious tho, and an easy fix. Using the battery "popper" eliminates that problem, not that it's a big one unless the speakers are buried.

True, but switching polarity at the amp later on is easy! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
