Noob seeking advice

Hi all! I've been lurking for a couple of days and decided to sign up to seek advice. I haven't run anything other than stock systems in my rides since the 80's, and I am feeling the need to upgrade my stock system in my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I am trying to get best bang for the buck, and I'm not looking to be rattling any windows as I go down the block. I am looking for good sound quality. I listen to a wide variety of music, from rap to rock to jazz to reggae. Bluetooth compatibility is a must.

I have made a few purchases so far, and I value your opinions on them. Also, I am looking for advice on what would be an appropriate sub and enclosure to pair with my system keeping in mind my stated goals. Here is what I have purchased so far:

Kenwood KDC-BT555U for $139 installed from Best Buy (haven't gotten it installed yet)

Polk DXi 691 6x9's for the front doors for $63 from Best Buy

Polk DXi 651 6.5's for the rear doors for $29 from Best Buy

Precision Power P900.5 5 channel amp for $208 from 3 Kings Audio

So far I am into this system for about $450 including tax. What sub and enclosure do you recommend? A 10" or 12"? Should I go with a Polk DXi sub to match the door speakers? What wiring kit do you recommend? Thanks in advance for any comments on my purchases and help in future selections.

I would buy a decent 300 watt rms sub and pay a professional to build a box for it. The box is more important than the sub that's in it and a good builder can make a cheap sub sound great if he knows what the sub is before he builds the box.

Brand isn't important so long as it's from a quality speaker manufacturer and the only thing you'd be matching by buying a Polk sub would be the name on the label.

As far as size is concerned, a good ten can make as much noise as a mediocre 12, considering the above. So it's really up to you. If you have the space and budget for a good 12, you can always turn the bass down if it's too much but you can't turn it up if it's already up all the way and still not enough.

for your money you did alright..... wiring kits, I always do 0ga, but you should be fine with 4ga.... spk wire I always run 12ga or larger you should be fine running 12 - 18

wish I woulda seen this thread sooner!!!!

Thanks for the input! If i'm not mistaken the amp calls for 8 gauge wiring, but it comes with an adapter for 0 gauge. Is there an advantage to doing 0 gauge?
yes there is... you will never have to wire it again no matter what system..... I always like the saying better safe than sorry..... I don't run under 4ga I don't care how small the amp is.....

I appreciate the thoughts about future scalability, but I will not be upgrading this vehicle further. Though I bet everyone says that //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I have purchased Polk DXi 651 6.5's for the rear doors

I have purchased Polk DXi 1202 12" sub for the trunk

I have purchased PPI 900.5 Amplifier for all speakers

I am concerned because Crutchfield says the door speakers won't fit.

Well like I said. Return them. Get 6.5 components for the frt and 5.25 coaxes for the rears
